*KDE for Windows 10 Exiles*

Upgrade your software, not your computer

In this post #KDE presents Plasma as one of many great interfaces available in #Linux, and they include some tricks for making the migration from #Windows 10 easier.

KDE for Windows 10 …

That title got me very surprised for a moment

even that would not be false, plenty of KDE software can run on Windows 10

(remember that “KDE” is the name of the community, not of the desktop environment “Plasma”)

I know, but plenty of people call Plasma just KDE, and the thumbnail is Plasma desktop.

Then what does the DE in KDE stand for?

(Edit: it was more of a joke, but I guess I am serious. Has it officially become not an acronym?)

according to dot.kde.org/2009/11/24/repositioning-kde-brand/ “KDE” no longer stands for anything
Repositioning the KDE Brand

KDE has changed over the past 13 years. The application framework has grown, matured and gone cross-platform, as have the applications. Strong growth in our community has created an increasingly diverse and large set of high-quality applications.

Well that’s not confusing at all
This article actually helps. I knew that plasma was the preferred name but never knew about the actual changeover. I didn’t realize it was over a decade ago though!! I guess I can still keep saying “I use kde” since I still use all the k* software in addition to the kde plasma desktop environment.
Funnily enough there was an unfinished port of plasma to windows
Yeah, I use Okular for viewing my PDF engineering documents because fuuuuuuck adobe. IT makes my computer slow enough as it is, I don’t need adobe making it worse.

Apologies for the YouTube link, but it's the only source I can find referencing it at the moment

That was, at some point, an ongoing project. You can still install individual KDE Gear apps separately, but a whole Plasma shell to replace explorer.exe would have been fun

How do they enable the cube desktop preview? 😍
These past 2 weeks in KDE: Wayland color management, the desktop cube returns, and optional shadows in Spectacle

Aaaaaand it’s a big one! I challenge anyone to read this week’s (well, these past two weeks’) report and not find something they’ve been wanting for a long time. :) Plasma 6…

@kolorafa Long live The Cube!
Go to System Settings -> Desktop Effects and search for cube
Looks more like a cheezy vista
I know it’s probably a setting you can change but it makes me sad that every OS seems to have moved to taskbars that don’t show program titles

It’s a setting you can change.

I’m glad titles can be hidden. They eat up all horizontal space so damn fast.

As mentioned, this is indeed quite easily changed. Infact that is one of the best points of KDE, has defaults similar to those a windows user are familiar with, but can be changed and customized a LOT
The spinning 4 walls Beryl thing… It needs an upgrade. Something that requires AI and a massive graphics card. Maybe it could be any shape like a spherical desktop? Or a single face surface infinity desktop? The 4 walls is still pretty cool though.
i agree. It works just fine on my gtx1080… in 2025! Shameful, I tell you!
