Our intro and Q from my kid:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? If you needed any motivation, what's something that motivated you to ride this week?

#BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter cc @bikenite

@bikenite A1. I am in Oakland, CA. I would love to get out more for a recreational ride, but my motivation for riding to get somewhere this week is that it's the most preferable way to get to that destination.

We are lucky to have had good weather so that the rides were comfortable.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1: San Francisco, CA - was motivated to ride mostly b/c of errands to run, food to eat and that it was magnificently sunny and warm out! #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite A1 Centeal NY. Good weather and dryish singletrack!

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Posting from Beaverton, Oregon, where the forecast looks like the rains of winter are finally over.

I was motivated to ride my bike this week because it was dry. It wasn't warm - I'm pretty sure I rode to work yesterday in near freezing temperatures. But it was dry.

#bikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1) The weather cooperated! #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1: NE North America. My doctor bugs me to get more exercise and we finally have tolerable biking weather, at least for the moment.

@ascentale @bikenite

London about to hit the sack.

Nothing motivated me to ride - feeling dreadful. Crawled to my turbo for a few sweaty km each night just to stop myself seizing up completely. This evening was first I actually enjoyed

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Usual (north of) Seattle, Cascadia, north of Line A. Nothing this week other than utility riding but this weekend the 2 Line starts officially crossing the lake with passengers, and I'm absolutely biking and riding _that_.

(We're gonna do a morning No Kings, then I'm gonna bike down to Redmond to catch the train, cross the lake on it ooooooo, check out some of the party events, then Lake Forest Park for their afternoon No Kings event.)

#BikeNite

#BikeNite A1: Posting from #WaterlooRegion. Indoors. Not biking.

Motivation would include good weather: Sun, warm temperatures, no wind (or at least, wind only in the direction I'm going). Maybe next week.

@ascentale
@bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. I’m in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. And I’m posting from a new-to-me Mastodon instance!

With variable Southwestern Ontario weather the last week, I didn’t get out for a ride. But I did get out to walk for groceries 😀

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Undisclosed location. If you need motivation to ride, are you really a cyclist?
@cainmark @AtanasE @ascentale @bikenite Or no, but being a cyclist a hallowed thing, it's just one possible identity. Many enjoy riding bikes without being cyclists.

@ascentale @bikenite

A1: Posting from York UK.

I was motivated to cycle on Tuesday, in spite of the very strong winds, by wanting to get to work and back (as I quite like eating and sleeping indoors!) 😉
Thursday was a nice day though, and I wasn't at work, so I went for a nice ride. Why? Because I can!

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Nashville, TN. Motivation: trying to hit a milestone mileage on my bike aligned with its 3 year anniversary tomorrow. I didn’t make it, but that’s ok. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. I am posting from Berkeley tonight. I am usually always motivated to ride, but it gets even easier when the weather is as good as it was this week. Warm, but not hot. Also, getting a new e-bike has motivated me even more!
#BikeNite #BikeTooter

@ascentale @bikenite
#BikeNite A1:
I'm posting from home in Rochester Minnesota.
I really don't need much motivation, but knowing the state trails were finally free of snow and ice motivated me to ride the Root River State Trail for the first time of the season on Tuesday.
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite You're out pretty much every day, so I suspect you have all the motivation you need!
@ascentale @bikenite A1: Here in the Hudson Valley. We had a bike party last night, and with perfect timing we had perfect weather! We were in T-shirts and folks waved as we rode past.
March is a tough month in the northeast—one day it’s tantalizingly warm (yesterday), today it’s freezing cold again, and tomorrow will also feel like winter. Brr!

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Posting, as usual, from rapidly melting Northern New England. I don't need motivation to ride, it's my only means of transportation other than my feet. As of the moment, I have exactly one beer in the house, with very cold weather in the forecast for tomorrow (high of only 35°F), so that's motivation for me to go to the market this evening.

Oh, I ordered an aluminium Crane bell for my bicycle, today. The plan is to also have a brass one and have two pitches.

@ascentale @bikenite

I am in #ChicoCA.

This week's motivation was being in #Reno for a conference and wanting to check our some trails.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite #biketooter A1 posting from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I was motivated this week to use New York’s many excellent bike lanes to bike across the Brooklyn Bridge.

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 drizzly Bunurong country, autumnal Melburn

Motivation: The smells of wet eucalypts after the rain, the hissing of tyres on a near-empty path, the sound of rain dripping from leaves. You're outside, if it is temporarily damp and cool then you'll be warm again when you're home and dry

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Ventura County, California. It was a LOT cooler this week, which really motivated me to try to get out on the bike, vs. the heatwave last week. Really enjoy it when the temperatures are cooler!

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Sydney, Australia.

My motivation is usually a need to get out of the house. But since the rain has stopped for the day I'll likely take the MTB out for a cruise this afternoon as well. Again, mostly to get out of the house :)

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Nagoya, Japan. What motivated rides this week? Mostly the need to buy food and gardening supplies. Also, midweek I biked into the city (about 10km) in a downpour to meet friends for an enjoyable night of Turkish food and carousing.
#bikeTooter

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Rushford, Minnesota.

I'm motivated for different reasons on different days, but today was when my niece said "Use it ir lose it".

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite Still in central illinois where we had rain and hail last night. This morning they said 33 degrees, winds were 20, gusting to 40 and I said, "bus day" to myself.
Motivation? I like to ride my bike. It feels good. I know I will feel better ALL F**IN DAY if I rode in. So I put the base layer, pants and sweats on. Base layer, warm top.
Went outside. Trees were not waving around. Oh, My THE CLOUDS WERE!!! BUT it as 7: 11. 2 minutes BEFORE "when I am sure I'll get there on time if I leave now."
Welp, I also had to bring the recycling bin in so it was 7:14 when the bike rolled on down the driveway.
OK, I was in a low gear in the middle ring charging North on the almost-there stretch and ... it was hard. Noted to self: "Fine" in town is not as fine out here, but it was still fine.
I was in by 8:05 which is fine.
And yea, I felt better all day :) AND had a tailwind home.
@ascentale @bikenite (It *said* it was 19 mph winds.
I think it was 22. But it was also kinda upgrade.
And it was hard but only on the edges of brutal and it was only a half a mile.

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Toots from Atlanta as usual. My motivation this week was needing to go into work 4 days of the week and pickup for 2 of them. Even tried a new, busier but less hilly, route home! (It was just okay)

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Santa Clara, CA. I don’t really need motivation, usually I’m just “I need a break” and so I’m off. This is the second week in a row I made a sandwich, stuffed it into my jersey, and rode to the park in Alviso for lunch.

I was rewarded with 4 egrets, 1 green heron, numerous Canadian geese and mallards, and some seeming very large brown fish in the “creek” along the bike path. #BikeNight

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Being cooped up inside too long is what motivated me
@ascentale @bikenite A1. hello from Highcliffe-on-Sea, my motivation this week was to get to work and back, stick two fingers up at the strong headwind (it's just a tempo workout), prepare for tomorrow's audax, and approach Mysterious Target 🤫 #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

Q1. Tokyo, Japan. My motivation was to get out on the river and enjoy the sakura while it was in bloom! (See my response to No. 8.)

#BikeNite

@oheso @ascentale @bikenite Oh it's peak here too, particularly at our most famous location at the Quad on UW main campus. I biked along some genuinely spectacular neighbourhood strands on the way to Remote Site on Thursday, too. It's looking like a good year in this way, at least. <3

#BikeNite #sakura

@moira @ascentale @bikenite TV is showing views now from Ueno Park. Of course the sakura there are lovely. Having experienced Ueno Park during hanami (sakura viewing season), I can promise that I would not willingly do so again.

#BikeNite #sakura

@oheso @ascentale @bikenite That's not something I ever did, so I can only imagine the mob. While obviously it's not close to like that here, it's still a big enough deal that local publications publish guides on how to avoid the crowds:

https://www.theurbanist.org/the-urbanists-guide-to-beating-the-seattle-cherry-blossom-crowds/

@moira @ascentale @bikenite That's gorgeous!

We're going out tomorrow (on foot) along the Kandagawa (a river that runs near our flat). It's lined with sakura on both sides.

#BikeNite #sakura

@oheso @ascentale @bikenite Oh nice, I love a good riverwalk. Have fun! :D
@ascentale @bikenite A1 I posting from Wilmington Delaware. The weather finally was good enough to ride. Not too cold, no snow drifts - so I started doing my errands on the e-bike again. I mailed a package at the post office and the person helping me even asked “You came in a bike?” “Yes. An e-bike.” Then I took the long way home by the nearby lake. Lovely! #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Eastern PA.

Sadly the answer is time. To fit in rides this week would require more time for me. I was able to onky go to Parkour 1 time, do a 4 mile run, and get a small hike in between grading, teaching, and prepping a special political geo lecture for Thur class. Which shoved back my Tuesday grading.

More hours in the day are needed. This week.

#bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Kamloops, BC. I have needed motivation as I've had trouble getting enough sleep for a couple of months and have hardly been out on the trike. However, we had a critical mass + bike disco last night so I've been out several times the past week - riding to work regularly again plus a couple of rides for fun and exercise.

The critical mass + bike disco was a lot of fun and quite colourful! I kind of wish I didn't have to work today, though.
😉

@ascentale @bikenite A1. In a city near Frankfurt, Germany.
I really apreciate the bikenite, that I get insights how cycling is all over the world. Thanks for hosting!

A1b. Sometimes I just need to think of the joy I have while riding my bicycle to get motivated. I don't feel it, while I am sitting at home, but I know that I will be happy, once I start riding. Just planning a small or even longer tour motivates me too.
#bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1 #BikeNite Cumbria, UK as is most common. The ride is the motivation, surely? Whatever comes along with that is just a bonus.
