Nearly a year later, I find myself going back to this post and adding its settings to get a sane #scrollbar on #Firefox.

It's annoying that despite Mozilla dropping Motif for GTK+ in their browser back when they open-sourced their browser, they still didn't consider maybe using the native UI widgets that GTK+ provided?

My chosen GTK+ emulates a nice retro OS/2 theme, which is actually rather quite usable on a #tablet #touchscreen. It's not the classical Motif UI of historical Unix, but it's usable. Another good choice would be the classic MacOS UI… or maybe 90s era Windows. Make those a little beefier on a touchscreen and you'd have quite a usable UI for both desktops and touchscreens.

But… Firefox and Chromium UI devs know better apparently.

#20252025Challenge
I use Windows 11 at work and it's a mess. One thing I abhor is the constantly hidden scrollbars for the sake of 'minimalism', especially as in some software you now have to jump through hoops to see the bar for a moment! Time to learn Linux.

The 2025 20-25 Challenge.

This year let’s get better at something by finding a little practice time most days, in my case drawing. - Do your activity for at least 25 minutes, at least 25 days per month.
- Use the hashtag #20252025Challenge on social media etc to track your progress
- Also use the hashtag to cheer on others.

That’s about it!

Have fun with your activities, whatever they may be!

Drawing, programming, dancing, cooking, make up, reading, languages, gardening, mastering high fives, sewing, astrophysics, vcr clock setting ...

TL;DR: always choose a scrollbar thumb color that makes it visible both against the container background and the scrollbar track.

What's with browser updates these days making the #scrollbar hard to grab?

Here's a suggestion: #VSCode shows the current open document in micro on the right edge. It's at least 5-6 times as wide as a conventional scroll bar and you can see where that one part of the document you need is.

Some browser should do this. (Hint hint, @mozilla. #firefox)

Some tweaks for #Firefox on a Linux tablet.

1. in General preferences under Browsing, tick "Always show scrollbar" to end the game of peek-a-boo.
2. In about:config, search for scrollbar.size and set it to some number between 20 and 60 (to taste)

Now you have a #scrollbar you can get a digit on!

Linux desktop environments suck. Reject modernity. Embrace tradition. Give me scrollbars.
