It is word-of-god canon that Shane Hollander is autistic, and holy crap Hudson Williams gave an incredible performance that really nailed it. I'm not talking about autistic coding to give a character more character, which we see a lot of, but an actually autistic character. We don't know if the actor is ND, but his father is autistic and he used that to inform his performance. Plus the text gets it right so he had good material to work with. But whatever went into it, this is one of the best portrayals of autistic identity I've seen on TV.

There are a lot of character bits that help show Shane's autistic traits and coping strats, like him neatly folding his clothes as he disrobes for a hook-up, or responding literally to Ilya's joking. One that everyone mentions is his penchant for ginger ale, which comes up in almost every episode. There's a lot of these, but one that slips under the radar is his restricted diet (at one point he's on a macrobiotic diet), which brings us to the tuna melt scene.

I haven't read the book but I have heard that Shane's eating gets more page time than screen time. And I believe that a tuna melt is probably one of Shane's autistic samefoods (something that's always good to eat, the default choice that always works, the old stand-by, you could literally eat this for every meal and not get tired of it). And somehow Ilya has noticed that Shane likes tuna melts, and has stocked his kitchen with everything he needs to whip one up. So when he casually offers to make Shane a tuna melt and Shane seems surprised, it's not because a tuna melt is a weird meal to cook for your lover, but because it's the best thing Ilya could have fed him to show that he really does care for him, and maybe more importantly, that he really sees him.

This is the magic of the tuna melt. It wasn't just post-coital protein loading. This was Ilya speaking in his love language of taking care of people. Remember Ilya takes care of his family, and not being able to be present to care for his father upsets him a lot. Makes sense, since he lost his mother so young. And we see even more of that – in an episode where everyone refuses to give Shane a ginger ale, Ilya just hands him one without Shane even having to ask for it. The tuna melt was no accident. It was premeditated romantic assault, and it worked. Except maybe it worked a little too well, and Shane had to flee when feelings got too intense.

I fucking love this show. The transgressive gayness of it gets all the attention, but the autistic representation is just as mind-blowing to me. This might be the first time I've seen this kind of autistic/allistic love shown where being autistic wasn't a fundamental problem to be changed, overcome, worked around, or compensated for, but just another part of a person that his boyfriend can see and love like the rest of him.

(If you haven't seen the show, be warned: You'll need to set aside at least 20% of your life to process all the feelings you get from watching it, then rewatching it, then watching all the reviews and reactions and fan edits. But it's so worth it.)

If we have the privilege of a stove, a saucepan & access to shops, whole grains are easy & so yum.

I love #porridge for this. I use a base of #quinoa flakes with linseed meal & chia, then add whatever else feels like fun - currently black #rice for gorgeous #purple colour, #amaranth for crunch, or #buckwheat for winter stodge. Maybe #sunflower seeds for added texture. Eat with #tahini (black tahini tastes amazing & looks like motor oil, wierd breakfast!) & #honey or #molasses, keeps me full for hours. Also delicious!

Even better for distractable me, I can start this when I wake up (put mixture in pot with plenty of water, bring to boil then put lid on & turn down to 1 on the induction cooktop) & even if I forget about it for hours it’s still perfect when I come back.

I love food.

The wholegrain revolution! How Denmark changed the diet – and health – of their entire nation

Is it possible to make a country healthier one slice of rye bread at a time? If the rocketing wholegrain consumption of the Danes is anything to go by, absolutely

It's a choice. I love food & eat simply & well, partner & 2 of our kids are chefs so it's a long time family culture. Partner & I eat home grown, home made & local, mostly vegan with occasional egg or fish. Meat maybe a couple of times a year. After being vegetarian for decades I've lately shifted to a position where if someone has prepared a meal for me, where I am a guest, I will eat it (sensory sensitivities permitting!) Happened partly out of respect for my son's partner & family who are from Vn & are farmers there (among other things). I do believe the more lightly & kindly we can live on the planet, the better. To be alive is to be part of a food chain, we are all sentient beings, even our veg. Tich Nath Hanh said, the caught fish understands the fisher's need to feed their family - I don't hold this literally, but take it as a reminder that all things are interconnected & my nourishment is always another's loss. Made of non-me elements & all that. I understand & respect a vow of veganism but feel there's also kindness in flexibility on this. Driving my car is a greater harm than what I may sometimes eat.

It may be also relevant that I have a full complement of #autistic sensibilities around food - with my sensory hyperacuity flavour, scent & texture can give intense pleasure or inspire revulsion, & I feel the effects of food in my body very acutely. I eat #SameFoods most days bc I know what works for me. My body tells me very clearly what she needs. Fortunately all my sensitivities make eating plain, veggie based foods a real joy.

Having said that, am happy you find pleasure in being vegan! The more we can cultivate literacy about food & its footprint & ethics, the better.

This is a very infodump answer 😂. This is how autistic folk communicate when we feel safe. Hope that's ok for you 😊

What has your journey to veganism been?

I just learned in a ND FB group that runny egg sandwiches are a common consumable.

I am fascinated AND my toes are curling to hide from extra sensory information.

I love a hot over easy egg to dip my butter diagonally cut toast into… and isn’t this basically a disassembled sandwich? 😶 My toes, which aren’t even involved, disagree. @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos #actuallyautistic #adhd #audhd

When I eat strawberries and grapes, my body screams at me:

"Yes, finally! This is what I've been trying to tell you to feed me! Why don't you ever listen to me?"

Same bench I sat on last time I got a donut. Same donut too. Happy Hot Two-Spirit Tuesday wherever you are.

My kid needs kappa maki weekly because of #samefoods and the rest of the family can always find something at our local good Japanese restaurant but I tire of the restaurant fare quickly. So tonight I just got #rice, and tossed in the large handful of #kale that the neighbor picked me from her front yard about 3 hours ago, and tossed in a pile of cherry #tomatoes of various shapes and sizes and colors, and smashed the tomatoes, then tossed in the rice and some sesame oil because it tastes so good with just #sesame oil and now I have the best #dinner ever.

Yesterday we went bilberry #foraging and today my love made bilberry muffins ❤️

We had lasagna for dinner even though we had it Sunday too #samefoods

Pain was bad today but other than that the day was nice.

One of the kids ate all the fruit and yogurt. Probably smoothies. Good for them, but....that's what I was eating for breakfast and bag lunches.

This is exactly why I do #samefoods! To avoid decisions and surprises!
