So, sniffing around the net I was hoping to find a cheap, used #MiniPC (i.e. small form factor) that can hold 3 2.5" SSDs. From what I can tell, these would be good candidates for a remote #backup/storage server (not interested in transcoding or anything).

Boosts appreciated. #thinkcentre #Optiplex #prodesk #selfhosted #homelab

Gibts hier Leute die in einem HP #ProDesk 600 SFF G5 die CPU gewechselt haben und dabei nicht einen der verkafuten CPUs eingebaut haben?
(möchte gern einen i5 9400>T< einbauen)

My old Tiny PC is getting more and more buggy, among other things the USB ports no longer work properly, whether the ones directly on the back of the mainboard or the two on the front of the case, which are connected to the MB with a cable... plus the already old Ryzen 5 3400G processor...

The situation really calls for something “new”, and in this case I would like to fall back on a refurbished device. It doesn't always have to be new, and many business devices are still more than usable. Especially with Linux. Besides, I already have a new device with the Beelink SER7.

After a bit of research, I'm currently considering an HP ProDesk 600 G6 SFF. I like the modular chassis concept, everything is easily accessible and well thought out. No comparison with cheap customer devices.

To illustrate this, I'll link an HP support video showing how well swapping components works. Now I just have to find a good offer...

anybody has a hint how to #debug a #linux kernel? i have an #hp #elitedesk (or a #prodesk) with #intel i5 8500t, but since a while it doesn't output any audio over #displayport / #hdmi. it does work fine on #windows. #dmesg says "snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: HDMI: pin NID 0x6 not registered". the same problem can be seen on #dell #optiplex
i have to admit i am semi stoked to dev on newer platform that has nvme - it should speed up db work a bit - the hp g3 motherboards are like 30 bucks - pretty good deal - the sweet spot for refubs now is 6/7th gen stuff #prodesk #refurb deals
i am getting basically old crap to build fw and ids box but it will do the job and that is all i care about, since i may try to resell some stuff am trying to get stuff that looks halfway decent - old hp gear - for opnsense fw i will probably go sff, for ids will go tower. i hate sff generally but for fw it is probably way to go #prodesk
I need a faster machine myself/ am looking - i want to do ids/ips as vm - the ids/ips hw req are a bit stringent - am going to need a lot of ram - may get a refurb hp or build something on am4 #z2 #prodesk #b570

@hughsie how about home user / gamer mainboards from #Gigabyte, #Asus, #Msi, #ASRock and other friends?

Also #hp #prodesk / #elitedesk would be nice. In their case UEFI can be updated over the internet from UEFI itself (no USB stick needed).

@r_em_y @geerlingguy the only exception of 10" never being used is in AV gear, as those started with huge 19" mountable tube amps and nowadays still use that instead.

Personally, I do like 10" and 19" and a lot of "smol" desktops like the #ThinkCentre Tiny / #ThinkStation Tiny and #ProDesk Mini / #EliteDesk Mini fit neatly alone in 10" and 19" together...

I've even seen 19" Dual-ITX and 10" ITX cases for mini servers...

Attached: 1 image @[email protected] Indeed. In europe it seems to be easier. I just found this : https://racknex.com/blog/2021/05/26/5x-raspberry-pi-in-10-inch/ which is pretty awesome. I share my personnal lab. Got spare rails and 3 more boxes like this in the same furniture. Could go brrrr with some more cool 10" stuff
