Any advice?
I picked up an #elitedesk g1 800. Installed #linux mint #xfce and tried doing heroic launcher for console option for nephew. I have some ROMs that I wanted to set up as well. Not really seeing a clean way to get emulator play to work.

Few dislikes...
Retroarch has failed me here
And heroic isn't true fullscreen on boot.
Some games can't play but likely hardware because they work when I jump PCs

Really just want to get a good frontend on boot for PC games and ROMs

If i could issue a wish to the #ZFS developers; it'd be "just IMPORT the friggen pool - it's all right THERE!"

ZFS is probably looking at / reading "headers or something" from EVERY block device under /dev/ anyways!

WHY THE DUCK do imports fail, when my stoopit #HP #EliteDesk office PC reliably FAILS to enumerate #NVMe in the SAME order upon reboot? Why is this kinda nonsense not a solved #problem!

I don't want by-id/too-long in my zpool iostat ..also, just as unreliable!

#mildlyInfuriating

it boots... the video doesn't show it, but it sees all three drives. now trying to get it to legacy boot an ISO off that ancient 4GB thumbdrive stuck in the back port.

#EliteDesk #miniPC #verticalVideo

my friend printed up the drive tray, which doesn't use screws and just rests in place with the hollow legs over the screw terminals for the original caddy. it does accommodate the second NVMe stick though.

I may put a lil foam on top of the SSD to smush against the lid and press it a little more firmly into place.

one of the solid legs rests on the CR2032 battery socket, the other on the mobo where there are no SMD components - there are a couple vias, though.

this model was made for the gen4 #EliteDesk Mini, I have a gen5 but those two generations are mostly the same when it comes to the drive caddy. #miniPC #DIY

So someone in FLOSS #DeltaChat group said #ARM #SBCs are terrible at computation power. And that a #miniPC has much better computation power comparing to something like #RaspberryPi. I had plans for a #homeserver and I wanted to use my #LibreComputer #Alta and utilize its #npu.

Libre Computer boards have really good prices comparing to the performance they provide comparing to other ARM SBCs such as #RPi. However, comparing them with a mini or even #microPC, an old micro PC provides better computation power.

LibreComputer #RenegadeElite features a #Rockchip #rk3399, 4GB DDR4 and costs 76 USD:

https://libre.computer/products/roc-rk3399-pc/

On the other hand, this renewed #HP #EliteDesk is 100 USD and with far better specs:

https://www.amazon.com/HP-EliteDesk-Mini-Desktop-Computer/dp/B08L9NB7RD?rnid=2257851011&th=1

Maybe it's not fair compare a renewed product with a brand new one. But it seems for having a homeserver to #selfhost things, if we factor out power usage, an old mini PC is better than a new ARM SBC.

However, if we also consider power usage, the abovementioned LibreComputer board consumes only 15 W under full load. And the old Ryzen 5 on that HP mini PC has a TDP of 35 W. This affects running cost of your homeserver and also the cost for the #UPS. But for myself, there isn't a big deal between 15W and 35W.

Edit: Comments or advises are very welcome!

Edit2: On second thought, I won't go for second hand or renewed. I want to use them as servers and this means 100% uptime. And I doubt second hand ones will survive, especially given the more power they consume which generates heat. And since my budget for a homeserver is 100 USD, ARM SBCs seem to be the only choice. I can research more though.

It's fancy new toy day: #HP #EliteDesk 800 G3 #SFF!

This might become my new #HomeServer - it's got 2x 3.5in HDD bays …🙄 of course, i'm missing one 15cm 90° SATA cable (+4 bucks, via eBay, takes a few days) …NO, you can absolutely NOT make straight SATA cables wörk 😅 …too tight!

…just like #ASRock, it's got fancy internet BIOS upgrade built in - plug it in, DHCP, yoink, done! 🤩 👍

…i'm not seeing any SR-IOV options in BIOS, though …we'll see

anybody has a hint how to #debug a #linux kernel? i have an #hp #elitedesk (or a #prodesk) with #intel i5 8500t, but since a while it doesn't output any audio over #displayport / #hdmi. it does work fine on #windows. #dmesg says "snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: HDMI: pin NID 0x6 not registered". the same problem can be seen on #dell #optiplex
I have an HP #EliteDesk 705 G3 (4core 3.1-3.8GHz 28nm AMD A12-9800E GB: 656s 1512m) with 16GB RAM. I've been trying to find a smaller, lighter, more power efficient replacement. I was looking at the #Radxa Zero 2 Pro (6core Armv8 1.8-2.2GHz 12nm GB: 375s 1133m) 4GB RAM. Then I remembered I have a Pixel 3a (GB: 367s 1221m) 4GB RAM, and I just got a $99 OnePlus 6T (GB: 524s 1747m) 8GB RAM. So it's hard to justify the #RadxaZero2Pro #SBC just for #AlpineLinux. What would you do in this situation?
