In the most recent episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Michaela Frye from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg about her work on the role of RNA modifications and RNA binding proteins in gene expression and cancer development. #podcast #chromatin #epigenetics

The Science Behind Being One of a Kind: Nature and nurture colliding

Our recent paper 📜 ( see https://fediscience.org/@idealab/116284938212580094 ) was well received in national and international press. We were featured not only by the press department of Bielefeld University ( https://aktuell.uni-bielefeld.de/2026/03/25/why-no-individual-is-like-another/ ) but also by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space ( https://www.research-in-germany.org/idw-news/en_US/2026/3/2026-03-25_Why_No_Individual_Is_Like_Another.html ) and by the American popular science magazine Nautilus ( https://nautil.us/the-science-behind-being-one-of-a-kind-1279329 ).

@DenisMeuthen , PI of the @idealab , contributed to an opinion paper 📜 in Trends in Ecology and Evolution ( @[email protected] ) . In this paper, we hypothesize that niche processes (niche choice, niche construction, niche conformance) and epigenetic variation are causally and bidirectionally linked. Studying this bidirectional causal relationship will deepen our understanding of the proximate mechanisms underlying individualization and elucidate how epigenetic variation arises, persists, and contributes to evolution. Chronic intestinal inflammation leaves lasting molecular scars, or epigenetic "memories," on seemingly healed gut tissues, fundamentally priming these healthy-appearing cells for future cancer development.

How inflammation may prime the gut for cancer

The epigenetic memory is part of a “one-two punch” that, along with a cancer-promoting mutation, can accelerate tumor growth

🧬🔬 We often think of #cloning as making a perfect carbon copy, but new #research shows it's much more complicated.

Scientists found that cloned #animals experience rapid changes in how their #genes are expressed, leading to #health issues that aren't present in naturally born animals.

Landmark experiment reveals a big unexpected problem with cloning

A 20-year study has shown that, like photocopying photocopies, cloning doesn't produce perfect copies – with big implications for farming, conservation and de-extinction

🧬 What if the anxiety you carry isn't entirely yours?

What if your grandfather's terror — or your grandmother's wartime hunger — is written, molecularly, into your cells?

Not metaphor. Peer-reviewed science.

A thread on transgenerational epigenetic inheritance and the extraordinary hope of erasing ancestral trauma. 🧵
