I'm going to lay out the very basics in the top post and then if anything needs further explaining that's what the thread is for. give your #Tzedakah dollars to mutual aid and help people directly. my spouse @[email protected] and I are both very, very #Queer #LGBTQ #Trans #Nonbinary, and also very #Disabled, #Deaf and #Neurodivergent #ADHD and all the other spicy brains shit. I'm #Sober but still unemployable due to the aforementioned spicy brains shit. we live with our cat Zoey and my parents. neither of us can work, and before I stopped being able to work I was the primary earner for our small household but I medically retired from trucking in December 2022; I'm still trying to apply for SSDI. spouse is doing some classes through the Department of Rehabilitation but it's a long road before those turn into paid employment. my parents support our housing needs but that is it, they're financially unable to support us further. we have food stamps, which covers some food and most of our groceries. everything else is on the good will of others. if it weren't for mutual aid our situation would be so much more desperate, but we need your help to keep on. we have a minimum credit card payment of $20 now and a needed payment of $40 if we actually want to pay this card off before the free interest period is over. aside from that we have costs that food stamps don't cover, cat food and cat litter, clothing, underwear, and other various essentials, which are how the card's run up in the first place when we haven't been able to cover needed things… my bank account balance has gotten currently under $50, and I have $150 that will clear in a few days, but it's pretty fucking desperate around here at the moment and we could use more of a hand up. we need to have savings for when I have top surgery soon and we'll have more expenses and less ability for me to do anything to earn money while I recover. I've put the last of my spending money into tools for ceramics, trying to hopefully turn that into a #DisabledArtist side hustle of some sort, and you'll see that from me hopefully sometime this year but we can't buy things that we need for the household with that yet. Transportation as a disabled person who doesn't drive is a sector that needs like. 10000000% improvement. Just improving the reach, depth, safety, and comfort of public transit would do a lot, but where we NEED to be on time bc appointments...
Better options than ableist paratransit that sucks at being on time (largely due to staffing, which is in large part due to sucky wages and also people cannot handle the fact disabled ppl have AGENCY and are Real People Thanks) or an agency associated with your insurance/healthcare facility of choice that mostly schedules you free lyfts. Which has a bug-filled app and requires an exorbitant number of phone calls to make work smoothly.
Like. What. Why are these the options???
Sometimes I am REALLY forcefully reminded I'm older than the ADA and that the ADA is selectively enforced as often as can be gotten away with.
"Ugly laws" weren't THAT long ago, y'all. Stand up and demand better for disabled ppl - *preferably* by boosting disabled voices.
