I made damson gin in 2023 and kind of forgot about it. I strained out the fruit after several months, but it sat in the jars until today.

Final strain today and bottled. 2.7 litres! It's really good ; perhaps a little sweet? I tried two different gins: a good mid-level ALDI gin and a very cheap Tesco gin. The better gin is worth it.

The jars will be straight back into service as we have more damsons and also trying sloe this year.

#TodayInMyKitchen Reaping the rewards of some freezer spelunking last night.

Found some already-prepared damson puree from last year, & whipped up a batch of my damson ice-cream in just 10 minutes.

So happy breakfast ice-cream is a thing. 😋

Damson jam

Our damson tree had an unusually large crop of fruit this year, so I decided to make a batch of jam. The recipe below details what appears to have worked well. It was adapted from a plum jam recipe found in a the book Jams & Chutneys, although the original recipe was for about half the quantity and gave the preparation time as a implausible 20 mins…

Finally made some Damson gin with the last of the frozen Damsons we picked in September. I had already cooked them and remove the stones when I decided to give gin a try, so it's rather an unorthodox way of doing it. Will see how it goes in a few months. Thanks to @derickr for the suggestion and to my mate Steven who shared some very good damson gin with me which clinched it (and then contributed a spare bottle of gin for this!)

It's damson picking time! Got ~8.5kg which is quite a bit more than last year's 3kg (most lost to the wind as we were too ill with COVID to pick them). Going to make more jam since that was very good, will be giving some to the neighbour but might also make some wine! #gardening #damsons #jam #wine #yorkshire #slaithwaite
Experimenting with #sound and #vision. I love the #French idea of #SonEtLumière. Here’s my psychedelic take on my #damsons, growing in my #garden, to be accompanied by Booker T and the MGs’ glorious #groove: ‘Home Grown’. I was wondering if UK #damsons or plums could be used to make Japanese style #umeboshi, seems https://twitter.com/StevieParle/status/375977883883565056 asked this back in 2013, and replied later in 2017 saying damsons worked:

"Think I did standard but washed with gin instead of sake and layered with nettles instead of shiso. Works well."

Something to try if our tree gives fruit...

“Anyone tried making umeboshi with damsons or another British plum?”

#5k run done, now it's time to get some damson jam made - using frozen fruit, which I know divides the jam-making world, but I've always been known as a bit of a maverick. Was a good, if very early, year for foraging, so we've got plenty of jam to make.
