Accessibility is a FOSS value. ā™æļø

You might ask why I advocate for #OpenSource so fiercely as a disabled creator. It is simple, proprietary software is a black box. If it doesn't work for your needs, you're stuck.

With #FOSS, the community can adapt, fork, and improve tools for everyone. Freedom isn't just for power users, it is for accessibility.

For instance, there is BRLTTY, which provides access to the Linux console for people who use a refreshable Braille display.

But people naturally think of physical disabilities when they consider accessibility. We also need tools for cognitive load and distraction. Tools like Logseq allow you to link thoughts non-linearly, making it easier to track projects when your brain feels scattered. Even the stability of Debian can be an accessibility tool for those of us who find the constant breaking changes of other OSs anxiety-inducing.

What is one FOSS tool that makes your life easier?   ā™æļø šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

BRLTTY problem on a fresh Raspbian OS in console mode: Uppon typing onto the command prompt, the cursor walks along the Braille display, but no character is displayed at all. When the monitor is disconnected, the Braille display shows whats written on the cmd line. Everything else is displayed correctly when navigating with the Braille display, as long as its a static text such as a system message. Any idea what this can cause? ... Update: After connecting a smaller monitor, also typed characters on the command prompt are displayed again. Seems, as BRLTTY doesn't like monitors larger 27 inches with this config. #help #linux #brltty #blind #BrailleDisplay

From the BRLTTY mailing list:

BRLTTY-6.8 has been released. As usual, it can be downloaded from:

http://brltty.app/

First, a note to Linux distribution maintainers. We'd very much appreciate it if
you could please update BRLTTY to this release - 6.8 - before upgrading to the
6.16 kernel. This is because of a much needed change within the kernel regarding
how double-width and zero-width characters are rendered on the screen when using
a text console. It couldn't be done in a fully backward-compatible way from
BRLTTY's perspective so, if the 6.16 kernel is being used before BRLTTY is at
least at 6.8, a braille user may notice some unexpected characters - primarily
zero-width spaces - when viewing a screen with double-width and/or zero-width
characters on it.

BRLTTY is (finally) able to properly render a screen that's larger than 255
columns and/or lines. There's one limitation when using a kernel earlier than
6.16 - the location of the cursor can't be determined if it's beyond column
and/or line 255 of the screen, In which case it isn't rendered.

@ptribble Hey, I saw that #BRLTTY worked on Solaris 9, can we make it work on #Tribblix as well?
I’m glad I have a braille-display when my linux-VM decides to break audio, and in the process of course also breaking espeakup.

Shout-out to the super-helpful folk at #debian-accessibility and #brltty who resolved an issue I had been having with my braille display for *years*. Sometimes the world of Linux really makes me so happy. I know have braille via bluetooth, at least on the laptop, which is going to make lesson setups much easier (and generally less self-strangulation with cables).

Fuck you too, SELinux.

SELinux is preventing brltty from getattr access on the chr_file /dev/bus/usb/003/073.

Using #linux with a #braille display is amazing.
And it is especially amazing when you have a computer which doesn't have any sound at all, unless you plug an audio-dongle or an audio-interface into it!.

I love having a #braille display again.
My next plan is to get it working with #linux with #brltty on the commandline.
