If there's one thing I care about more than trans rights its that people at the lowest rungs of society have gifts and talents that equal that at the highest, and their gifts are being squandered, and no one really internalizes that or cares.
Amazing. Discord is down and it's *still* better than Matrix.

I'm tired of all these mage verifications.
“Centrism” is a non-specific catch-all category for people who are authoritarian right by inclination but lack any coherent theory of politics.

Setting up age verification for my BBS

It's simple: if you know what a BBS is and manage to connect to it, you're clearly over 18.

This is somewhat related to why complaints about political polarization are so misguided: the people who are most polarized are also generally the best informed. Reliable Republican voters are business owners and Klansmen, they're making solid calculations about which party will serve their interests better. Reliable Democratic voters are educated professionals and union workers, again making accurate assessments of which party is better for them. Generally speaking, partisans actually know what they're talking about and are politically literate. This is because US politicians and formal politics has really stratified as a result of things like worsening economic inequality and democratic backsliding, but the partisan voters are responding fairly rationally.

Less polarized voters are also less informed, generally. Low information voters are the swingiest, the most likely to split ticket, etc, because...honestly that's the behavior of someone who doesn't understand US politics, right? Like US party politics is very much an affair of rival gangs made up of different camps and interests, and the pressures of each party internally are a much, much, much stronger predictor of how any candidate will act in office than anything about them personally. A sophisticated, well informed voter gives a lot of consideration to the coalition a politician is enmeshed in, frankly more than even their stated policies tbh.

I like the series of illustrations of anime girls doing electronics with components bigger than the girls. Today I discovered that my favourite electronics textbook had a series of similar illustrations made by artists Nikolai Frolov and Zoya Florinskaya. The illustrations were originally created for a 1979 edition, but the publisher didn't allow them to go to print. The first edition that got the illustrations was one from 2000, and it had a bunch of new illustrations including Human Scale Microelectronics.

the two main tenets of masculinity - male supremacy's cultural indoctrination for men - are, "men should brutalize women," and "men should brutalize each other to determine who has the most privilege to brutalize women."

if men can't leave the above behind in favor of the near-infinite expanse of other things that they can be instead, then they're not doing the work.

this online tumblr/twitter/&c "social justice" thing was predicated on an individualist approach to calling out bad behaviors with the presumable goal of making people better, and at some point we should reckon with how it gave people moral permission to be their absolute worst selves.

@junebug remember that time Eugen got a cease and desist from VW because someone on shrike club made a fake volkswagen account and tweeted out that it was a nazi company and so Eugen had to go to Kate and be like can you please take this down?

that was hilarious
