#EnvironmentalGroups sue #Trump’s #EPA over repeal of landmark #climate finding

Lawsuit from #health and #EnvironmentalJustice groups challenges the EPA’s rollback of the ‘endangerment finding’

"More than a dozen health and environmental justice non-profits have sued the Environmental Protection Agency over its revocation of the legal determination that underpins US federal climate regulations.

"Filed in Washington DC circuit court, the lawsuit challenges the EPA’s rollback of the '#EndangermentFinding', which states that the buildup of heat-trapping #pollution in the atmosphere endangers #PublicHealth and welfare and has allowed the EPA to limit those emissions from #vehicles, #PowerPlants and other #industrial sources since 2009. The rollback was widely seen as a major setback to US efforts to combat the #ClimateCrisis.

"The suit was brought by the American Public Health Association [#APHA], #AmericanLungAssociation, the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, the #EnvironmentalDefenseFund, the #NaturalResourcesDefenseCouncil [#NRDC], the #SierraClub and 11 other public health and environmental organizations. The lawsuit was filed by green legal organizations #CleanAirTaskForce and #Earthjustice and it names the EPA and the agency’s administrator, #LeeZeldin, as defendants.

" 'EPA’s repeal of the endangerment finding and #safeguards to limit vehicle emissions marks a complete dereliction of the agency’s mission to protect people’s health and its legal obligation under the #CleanAirAct,' said #GretchenGoldman, president and CEO at the #UnionOfConcernedScientists, another one of the groups behind the lawsuit. 'This shameful and dangerous action by the Trump administration and EPA Administrator Zeldin is rooted in falsehoods not facts and is at complete odds with the public interest and the best available science.' "

Look what came in the mail today!

Very excited to present our natural gas research during my first ever attendance of the American Public Health Association annual conference.

We are back to the dangers that will be unleashed because of the foolhardy decisions of a few. The entire healthcare, academic and life sciences industry in the US is in turmoil and clinical trials, pharmaceuticals and general practitioners are going to be decimated. It's almost as if the last half-decade of covid never happened! Dismantling of the Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy, cutting funding to NIH, it's the same playbook that got us into this mess. Of course, all of us in the know saw this coming and it's playing out exactly as expected. I will no longer participate or sacrifice a drop of sweat, blood or tears. We've lost too many good people, family, friends, time with loved ones and ourselves.
It was all lies and propaganda until the people making these decisions started dying... Even on their death beds they thought horse medication would save them. You cannot rationalize or have useful conversation with the clinical definition of an idiot. The laws, rules and regulations that protect the US, managed and put forth by our elected officials based on the people are all effectively dead. I'm not so naive to believe this wasn't always the plan but now that we are here, it should be obvious to anyone, we are on our own. It's time we all started acting that way.

Scientists sue NIH, saying politics cut their research funding

A group of scientists and health groups sued the National Institutes of Health on Wednesday, arguing that an “ideological purge” of research funding is illegal and threatens medical cures. Hundreds of NIH research grants have been abruptly canceled for science that mentions the words diversity, gender and vaccine hesitancy, as well as other politically charged topics. The lawsuit argues that has led to grants being cut that fund studies of HIV prevention, violence prevention in children, pregnancy health disparities and Alzheimer’s disease, among others. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Massachusetts.

Update. The #BMJ isn't the only journal pushing back against the #CDC directive that staff scientists should retract pending publications that use Trump-banned words. (Earlier in this thread.)

Kudos to the _American Journal of Public Health_ (#AJPH) for pushing back as well.
https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/114076

From publisher Georges Benjamin: "We at the American Journal of Public Health have no interest in following the president's prohibitions on language. We will publish things under our guidelines, under our ethical principles." Benjamin acknowledged that the journal may now get fewer submissions from government scientists.

AJPH is published by the American Public Health Association (#APHA).

Call for Endorsements: Statement urging CDC/HICPAC to protect health care workers and patients

Use this form to endorse the statement prepared by public health experts urging the CDC and its Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) to protect health care workers and patients when updating infection control guidance. Endorsements are welcome from organizations and individuals in public health, health practitioner, and related fields. Read the statement here. DEADLINE TO ENDORSE IS FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2024, 11:59 PM PACIFIC. ORGANIZATIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL ENDORSEMENTS WELCOME. Background: On November 3, 2023, CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) approved and recommended to CDC draft updated Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings. HICPAC developed the guidelines through a closed process that excluded key experts, health care workers, patients, and the public. HICPAC's proposals ignore critical scientific evidence and fail to protect health care personnel and patients from COVID-19, influenza, and other infectious aerosols in health care settings. Last year, hundreds of public health experts and public supporters sent three letters to CDC Director Mandy Cohen detailing our concerns about the HICPAC guideline update process and the deficiencies in the initial HICPAC draft recommendations. We called upon CDC to seek broad public and expert input during the development of the draft guidelines. When HICPAC sent its problematic draft to the CDC, we called on CDC Director Mandy Cohen to reject the draft. In response to our advocacy, on January 23, 2024, CDC returned the draft to HICPAC for further work! CDC specifically asked HICPAC to address some of the core concerns raised by advocates, including categories of transmission-based precautions, use of respiratory protection vs. masks, and source control recommendations. The next step in the process is for the HICPAC Isolation Precautions Guideline Workgroup to reconvene and address these questions. In its January 2024 announcement, the CDC also made a public commitment to expand the scope of technical expertise on this Workgroup. Recently, individuals with expertise in some key disciplines (e.g., respiratory protection) have been added, but key disciplines and perspectives are still missing! Please join us and endorse this statement, which lays out the approaches that HICPAC and its Workgroup need to incorporate in updated guidance in order to protect healthcare personnel and patients from infectious diseases in healthcare settings. DEADLINE TO SIGN IS FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2024, 11:59 PM PACIFIC. ORGANIZATIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL ENDORSEMENTS WELCOME Read the full statement
