Lawsuit from #health and #EnvironmentalJustice groups challenges the EPA’s rollback of the ‘endangerment finding’

"More than a dozen health and environmental justice non-profits have sued the Environmental Protection Agency over its revocation of the legal determination that underpins US federal climate regulations.

"Filed in Washington DC circuit court, the lawsuit challenges the EPA’s rollback of the '#EndangermentFinding', which states that the buildup of heat-trapping #pollution in the atmosphere endangers #PublicHealth and welfare and has allowed the EPA to limit those emissions from #vehicles, #PowerPlants and other #industrial sources since 2009. The rollback was widely seen as a major setback to US efforts to combat the #ClimateCrisis.

"The suit was brought by the American Public Health Association [#APHA], #AmericanLungAssociation, the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, the #EnvironmentalDefenseFund, the #NaturalResourcesDefenseCouncil [#NRDC], the #SierraClub and 11 other public health and environmental organizations. The lawsuit was filed by green legal organizations #CleanAirTaskForce and #Earthjustice and it names the EPA and the agency’s administrator, #LeeZeldin, as defendants.

" 'EPA’s repeal of the endangerment finding and #safeguards to limit vehicle emissions marks a complete dereliction of the agency’s mission to protect people’s health and its legal obligation under the #CleanAirAct,' said #GretchenGoldman, president and CEO at the #UnionOfConcernedScientists, another one of the groups behind the lawsuit. 'This shameful and dangerous action by the Trump administration and EPA Administrator Zeldin is rooted in falsehoods not facts and is at complete odds with the public interest and the best available science.' "

"In a victory for the fossil fuel industry, a set of Obama-era rules that required the federal government to regulate the emissions of six #GreenhouseGases is being reversed by the Trump administration. The changes would undo the legal basis of the fight against global warming, as well as remove #industrial reporting obligations and roll back #emissions standards for cars and trucks. Environmental engineer Gretchen Goldman helped author those emission standards while working for the Department of Transportation under the Biden administration. Now as the president of the #UnionOfConcernedScientists, she says their repeal will not only increase what drivers pay at the pump but also set U.S. innovation back on the world stage. Access Denied: How the Trump Administration Is Eliminating Public Input

"The Trump administration is systematically attacking a wide range of public health, environmental, and safety rules. By law, federal agencies must notify the public about potential rule changes and give them the opportunity to make comments on those changes. But in many cases, the Trump administration is evading that legal requirement.

In the first six months in office, roughly 600 final rules were issued across six key science agencies. In 182 of these rules, the administration bypassed the public notice and comment period, cutting the public out of the process of shaping rules that affect their health and safety and our planet. This undermines the principles of accountability and transparency that should be part of our democracy."

Trump signs order to shift disaster preparations from Fema to state and local governments

“From day one, the Trump administration has been eroding the nation’s capacity to plan for, respond to, and recover from disasters,” Moore told Reuters.

"'They’ve overseen the dismissal of 1,000 Fema staff – who won’t be there to respond to a flood or wildfire – and are withholding funding from local and state governments who are doing risk reduction projects and more.'

"Shana Udvardy, a senior researcher at the #UnionOfConcernedScientists, said she was concerned the order marked 'another dangerous step' that would leave communities with fewer resources to prepare for future disasters.

"'The executive order shifts most of the responsibility for #DisasterPreparedness to state and local governments, asking them to make more expensive infrastructure investments without outlining the federal role in that,” she said."

Nuclear Expansion Sparks Concerns from Scientists of '#CatastrophicFailure'

"A group of scientists has spoken out against a new bill that aims to accelerate the development of #nuclear energy.

"The U.S. Senate passed the #ADVANCEAct on Tuesday, which, among other things, makes it easier and quicker for companies to apply for permits and creates new incentives for advanced #nuclear reactor technologies.

"It was passed with bipartisan support (88-2 votes), with Democrats getting behind it for environmental reasons and Republicans seeing it as a way to ensure electricity supply and create jobs.

"An example of how the bill could be applied is with the Bill Gates-backed company #TerraPower, which has so far been unable to secure a permit to build a $4 billion #Natrium Reactor on an old #coal plant site in Wyoming, Reuters reports.

"But the Union of Concerned Scientists, a science advocacy nonprofit, is worried about the #safety implications of the bill, which is now on its way to President Joe #Biden to sign into law.

"The organization's director of nuclear power safety Dr. #EdwinLyman compared the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's [#NRC] relaxing of rules to the Federal Aviation Administration doing the same with air transport."
