For the first time since the start of his second term, #Trump hit 50% #disapproval in #VoteHub's #polling #aggregation today. https://votehub.com/polls/

Presidents have come back from this. #Reagan bottomed out at something like 30% early in his first term, and then of course won re-election in a landslide. But Trump doesn't have that kind of political acumen.

If we have anything resembling a fair #election, 2026 will be a bloodbath, and I'm willing to bet 2028 as well. If we don't, well, it will be a bloodbath of a different kind.

Estimating the success of re-identifications in incomplete datasets using generative models - Nature Communications

Anonymization has been the main means of addressing privacy concerns in sharing medical and socio-demographic data. Here, the authors estimate the likelihood that a specific person can be re-identified in heavily incomplete datasets, casting doubt on the adequacy of current anonymization practices.

Sleeping bacteria: New study uncovers mechanisms of dormancy involving protein aggregation

Researchers at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology and the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research have revealed a mechanism involving protein aggregation that allows bacteria to enter a dormant state, a phenomenon that is associated with the persistence of infections and the challenge of antibiotic resistance. Their study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

For the past 8 years, I have been working as a side-project at an #OpenSource #news #aggregation platform meant for private use and without commercial purposes.

Its peculiarity is that it tries to grab the full text of all articles it aggregates, which admittedly is borderline behavior w.r.t. the copyright holders... but it's done in the interest of the platform users: to protect their data, while making it possible to process, search, order and filter the news for them.

Today marks a new start in the story of the news aggregation platform: faced with the tough decision to either kill it or rewrite the code from scratch and make it cloud-native... I have decided it deserves another chance, and started a new open-source project called flash with a simpler and leaner architecture, and based on more solid, modern and powerful technologies.

For more details check this blog post: https://calomelano.it/?p=2464.

If all this makes you curious give it a try: https://notizie.calomelano.it or (if your are technically inclined) have a look at the source code on Gitlab: https://gitlab.com/simevo/flash.

And feel free to get in touch with me here if you have Opinions in these matters!

A new start for the news aggregator

The time has come to reassess the Ethical Information Group side-project which has kept the https://notizie.calomelano.it news aggregation service up and running for the last 8 years, and made it recently reach the milestones of 4 million aggregated articles and 46 GB of
