Prison Worksongs

One of the most beautifully haunting things I’ve listened to!

Songs recorded in the 1930s when the railways were being built, to wood being chopped to machining licence plates. It was a time where many were imprisoned, a lot of which for the complete wrong & horrendous reasons & then put to work in awful conditions

It was not just POC that were imprisoned, but also parts of the Asian & Irish community in the USA.
This was recorded in the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison

Way back when I was 15/16 in college. I wrote a massive paper on the Blues & slavery & how the latter was the ignition & birth to what would become modern day music, even to this day.
I received a double distinction & then 2year later saw BB King with Gary Moore supporting.
Truly special!

#Music share, day 5: #Kuwait 🇰🇼
Before oil became the major export of the #MiddleEast, pearls were a very important source of income for many families. Pearl divers of the Eastern Gulf states, mainly Kuwait and #Bahrein 🇧🇭, have their own repertoire of #WorkSongs, a vocal music named الفجيري (fidjeri, fjiri). This involves a lead singer (نهام; nahham), chorus, clapping, and drumming. The two kind of drums used are the المرواس (mirwās), a small double-headed drum, and the الجاهلة (jāhlah), a clay pot. Most of the songs talk about the hardships of the sea, and free-diving in particular, which was dangerous due to pressure, currents, and (although they wore protective clothing) jellyfish stings, but also to serve as encouragement.
This is a #performance by the Mayouf Bahri band, presenting the repertoire in order of the activities involved with a pearling expedition. #ethnomusicology #WorldMusic #IntangibleHeritage

Those familiar with African-American folklore will be very familiar with John Henry, the "steel-drivin' man" who battled a steam-powered drill and won, then died.

John Henry was considered a mythical figure until historian Scott Nelson discovered that he was a real person, a convict who had been put to work on the C&O Railroad. The link contains a video of a lecture by Professor Nelson.

Steel Drivin' Man: John Henry, the Untold Story of an American Legend | Virginia Museum of History & Culture

According to the ballad that made him famous, John Henry did battle with a steam-powered drill, beat the machine, and died. Folklorists have long thought John Henry to be mythical, but historian Scott Nelson has discovered that he was a real person—a nineteen-year-old from New Jersey who was convicted of theft in a Virginia court in 1866, sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary, and put to work building the C&O Railroad. There, at the Lewis Tunnel, Henry and other prisoners worked alongside steam-powered drills.

#Kyiv-born, #France-based #pianist Dimitri Naïditch moves freely between the worlds of #classicalmusic, #contemporarymusic & #jazz; with his new & timely #album "#Ukraine, #chansons sans voix", he set to explore the exceptionnally rich heritage of #traditional #Ukrainian #songs, #worksongs or #lullabies (about 800,000 have been collected!), arranging them for #piano from his classical & jazz background like one would cut a rough diamond and bring to light its many facets.
