This is probably one of my favourite Rast Peşrevs by Refik Fersan (1893-1965), maybe because it's the first one I learnt on turkish ney. A peşrev is an instrumental prelude often consisting of 4 hâne (sections) separated by a teslim, a repeated melody that ties the hâne together. The third hâne usually does the biggest modulation away from the base makam. Here it's played on kemençe, yaylı tanbûr, oud and kanun.

This is a nice duet between piano and fujara. The fujara is a very large Slovakian overtone #flute with 3 finger holes. The one played in this is in G, a very common size offering a warm sound, balanced range and good volume. It's around 174cm / 5ft 8inch tall. One thing that fujara does really well is expressive trills, which you can hear right at the start of this piece.

Gagaku is Japanese court #Music. Although the protoform can be traced back to 585, the genre and the imperial academy (gagakuryo) became established at the start of the 8th century. It is heterophonic, meaning each instrument in the ensemble plays a variation on the core melody.
Etenraku is one of the most famous pieces in the Gagaku repertoire, and is fairly typical with a very slow tempo and the wind instruments using microtonal inflections.

"Listen to the ney as it tells a tale
Complaining of separation
Ever since I was separated from the reed bed
My lament has caused man and woman to moan
I want a chest torn by severance
So that I may unfold the pain of love desire."
It's almost impossible to play a melodic phrase like this on my Turkish ney without thinking of these words by Rumi. This short excerpt is from a little taksim I was playing earlier. #Poetry #Poem #Music #Ethnomusicology #Flute

This is Sand, Roots & Blossom by Rihab Azar, a female oud player from Syria.
Fun fact: a Syrian female oud player was the subject of Turkish novelist Fatma Aliye Hanın's 1898 novel Udi, which is based on the true story of Bedia from Aleppo who uses her oud as a means of resistance against patriarchy and the hardships of life. After her father's death and divorcing from her unfaithful husband, her
oud becomes her “most loyal friend.
