Stipendiary Lecturer in Music

Somerville College and St Catherine’s College jointly propose to appoint a permanent Stipendiary Lecturer in Music to support their teaching needs in music analysis and musicology. Duties of the Post Teach Analysis and Musicology to undergraduate students in tutorials and classes for eleven weighted hours each week averaged over the academic year (split between the two colleges as detailed above). Prepare, set, and mark written work, and provide feedback to students (including the timely submission of termly reports). Act as personal tutor and organising tutor for undergraduate Music students at Somerville College, and  act as college adviser to some postgraduate Music students at Somerville College and St Catherine’s College if required. Arrange teaching and to set and mark collections (termly exams held in college). Play a significant role in the undergraduate admissions process, and will be required to participate in appropriate admissions training by the beginning of November 2026 if they have not already done so. This involves assisting with shortlisting candidates for both colleges, and interviewing primarily for Somerville College. In years when Somerville College does not need additional interviewers, the postholder will be expected to interview for St Catherine’s College. Be a member of the Somerville College Education Committee and will be expected to attend its meetings. Contribute to select access and outreach initiatives, including during vacation periods, for both colleges.  The successful candidate should be able to teach the following, as defined in the current exam paper syllabus definitions:  Prelims Analysis and Musicology: first-year undergraduate tutorials/classes in Analysis and musicological topics. Final Honour School: second- and third-year undergraduate tutorials/classes in Musical Analysis and Criticism, Analysis Portfolio, and musicological topics. @ZPD Der zugrundeliegende Code von Spielen liegt nicht immer offen und ist oft schwierig zu extrahieren (geschweige denn zu reverse-engineeren). Im gezeigten Beispiel "Ghouls 'n' Ghosts" (C64) gelang das mithilfe von Programmierer und Komponist. Dort ergab sich eine Aufteilung: Letzterer konnte sich auf die musikalische Konzeption und Parametrisierung konzentrieren, die der Programmierer dann in Assemblercode umsetzte 🤓 #hacknplay2026 #chiptune #musicology
@ZPD Als neues Spielgenre entstand das "Musikspiel": Der Spieler beeinflusst dabei durch die Handlung den Klang. 🕹️ 🎶 Ein schönes Beispiel dafür ist Moondust für den #CommodoreC64 (1983). @ZPD Eine typische Musiksoftware aus der Zeit ist "Ludwig" für den Atari ST. Der Computer war für MusikerInnen besonders attraktiv, da er eine MIDI-Schnittstelle besaß. Durch Sequencerfunktionen unterstützte Ludwig insbesondere algorithmische Kompositionen. Man brauchte nur ein MIDI-fähiges Keyboard und schon konnte es losgehen 🎹 #hacknplay2026 #chiptune #musicology
@ZPD Ein Vergleich der BASIC-Dialekte zeitgt ganz unterschiedliche Zugriffsmethoden auf die ebenfalls sehr unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften der jeweiligen Soundchips. Einige Systeme unterstützen westliche Notenbezeichnungen (PLAY-Befehl), während andere mehr in Richtung Synthesizer gehen (SOUND-Befehl). Letzteres ist schwieriger zu beherrschen, erlaubt aber mehr experimentelle Herangehensweisen! #hacknplay2026 #chiptune #musicology
@ZPD Die Quellen zum Thema sind reichhaltig. Das geht bis hin zu Programmcode aus Hobbyzeitschriften und Coding-Literatur. Oft kommt es vor, dass die User deutlich mehr aus den Geräten rausholten, als die Hersteller - wenn man sich zB die Handbücher anschaut - anscheinend intendiert hatten #hacknplay2026 #chiptune #musicology
