Short circuit, or: Wired for words
A poem in ‘Shoe Laces’ form
A man found he was drawn to words
a lot.
He'd write in rhyme till things just got
absurd.
The toaster popped in perfect rhyme
one day.
The kettle answered right away
in time.
At last the kitchen blew a fuse
one night...
The fixer had to rhyme it right!
‘Shoe Laces’ form?
Shoe Laces is a poetry form created by Michael Fantina and named by Doubletake, who thought the crossing rhyme pattern at the end looked like tied shoelaces.
The poem has 11 lines. The line lengths alternate between 8 syllables and 2 syllables:
8-2-8-2-8-2-8-2-8-2-8
The longer lines are written in iambic tetrameter (four iambic beats), and the shorter lines are written in iambic monometer (one iambic beat).
The rhyme scheme is:
a-b-b-a-c-d-d-c-e-f-f
This means lines 1 and 4 rhyme, lines 2 and 3 rhyme, lines 5 and 8 rhyme, lines 6 and 7 rhyme, and the final two lines rhyme with each other.
d’Verse poetics: Legs eleven
This week at d’Verse, poets are invited to explore the Shoe Laces form.
Let’s write poetry together!
When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
