Britain’s Brexit reality check: Why the majority now want back in

Every UK poll now shows a majority longing to rejoin the EU – but can Britain overcome its Brexit scars?

I no longer bother to read #Freedland, #Toynbee, #Behr etc - not because I disagree with them, but because their analysis is always so piss poor - and also often almost entirely inside the Westminster bubble.

Having said that, I do look at The Guardian most days - it does have some brilliant regular columnists - George Monbiot, Aditya Chakrabortty, the absolutely brilliant Kenan Malik, etc - but moreover often features guest contributors that are not journalists, but real experts in their fields. This is where, for me, it wins out even over publications more aligned to my own views.

Found this tile near South Station in #Boston purely by chance after our flight was cancelled and we had to run to catch a train instead (at least we were able to work something out to get home). Anyway…it’s the only tile I know of in Boston, but I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t have enough eyes in Boston or there just really aren’t any others up there.

"Labour is parading its true left wings credentials" in the Rutherglen byelection according to Polly Toynbee in The Guardian this morning.
She says this with no sense of irony and apparently no memory.
In 2007 she wrote "Disaster in Iraq masks the truth: Blair's brand of social justice by stealth transformed Britain for ever".

Compared with the life-span of a human being the time-span of a civilization is so vast that a human observer cannot hope to take the measure of its curve unless he is in a position to view it in a distant perspective; and he can only obtain this perspective vis-a-vis some society that is extinct. He can never stand back sufficiently far from the history of the society in which he himself lives and moves and has his being.
~ Arnold J. #Toynbee (1889-1975)
This #ToynbeeTile lives in west Philly near #UPenn. You can see the classic white on black with a red border in the center, plus auxiliary plaques above (white) and below (blue). Unfortunately, the text on the plaques was quite degraded by the time I verified this tile, so all I can make out is a typical exhortation to “make & glue tiles”. I believe there are older images extant with more legible text, but need to find them. #toynbee #streetart #art #mastoart #graffiti #graffitiart #photography
#Toynbee talking nonsense in the #GuardianUK https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/16/tories-labour-keir-starmer-local-elections-votes?utm_source=newsshowcase&utm_medium=gnews&utm_campaign=CDAQgI3N6OGHtKbtARiug6KS7sPRqYQBKg4IACoGCAowl6p7MN-zCQ&utm_content=bullets Labour hardly moved in terms of popularity - their gains were by default and there is no sense of a wave of support for Starmer and his light blue policies.
The Tories are on the ropes now – and Labour’s knockout blows are not far away

‘Boring’ Keir Starmer is more radical than you might think, and he’s already bringing home the votes, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee
