At one time there were as many as 370 stones, but by 1983, only 57 were known to still be in situ. Each one features an R and the date it was erected, with the oldest one still remaining dating from 1574.

Glasgow used to have a similar set of stones marking its burgh boundary, but it seems none remain in place. However, a few are preserved in the collection of the Glasgow museums.

Historical boundary stones marking the edge of the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen. Provided by local citizens, these stones would be inspected on a regular basis to ensure the boundaries of the burgh were being respected. This was known as as the Riding of the Marches, and traditionally took place on Landemer Day (14th of June).

This is a beautiful set of late 19th Century townhouses on Blairbeth Terrace in Rutherglen. The first two floors are classic Greek Revival, with more than a hint of a Thomsonesque finish to the doorways and roundels on the frieze. However, they're topped by a French style Mansard roof, with some beautiful fish-scale slatework on part above the curved terminal pavilion. Altogether, these features result in a very attractive appearance.
