It’s risky, but it could change everything: Labour is at last beginning to focus on the young

People my age have been privileged all our lives, yet we’re still the political priority. Votes at 16 is the start of a welcome change, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

@sjcooke66 @statsguy This thread seems to be at risk of becoming an I Hate #PollyToynbee More Than You show. Which would of course be a very welcome development 😈 😅 🤣
@lionelb But as usual #PollyToynbee can't even be half-rIght on one simple point (that Starmer is crap at politics) without missing the point (that #Starmer was chosen by #McSweeney precisely because he is crap) and telling the whopper lie that Starmer is "a good and clever man". Starmer is a compulsive liar with a record which got increasingly ugly as his career progressed.

"Here is the Starmer tragedy, a good and clever man not made for politics or leadership", writes #PollyToynbee in #TheGuardian.

This is a deranged denial of reality.

#Starmer is a serial liar who broke all his pledges made to win the #LabourParty leadership. He purged Jewish ppl as #antisemites, insisted that cutting water for Gaza was legal, & redefined anti-genocide protesters as "#terrorists".

He is the v opposite of a #goodMan

'The word “misinformation” is now all but banned among any in the US relying on government approval: the US National Science Foundation, for instance, terminated grants worth many millions it had awarded to researchers studying misinformation'

Trump’s anti-truth crusade is not just an attack on facts – it’s an unravelling of the Enlightenment

The US president, JD Vance and Nigel Farage seem to believe that checking facts is a form of censorship. Nonsense: speech is only free when it is anchored in truth, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

I like Polly Toynbee, even if I often disagree with her. She is consistent and has real, old-fashioned passion for a better society.

In the last year she kept pointing out the hidden good things in the disastrous Starmer/Reeves project. Sometimes she was at least partially right.

Her piece in today's Guardian is about the removal of the whip from a selection of the Labour MPs who voted against the horrible Welfare Bill. She's finally had enough of Starmer's cruelty and incompetence. Even Polly can't defend the man anymore. That means something.

Worth reading. Her contrasting Starmer with Blair is illuminating.

Bluster, bullying, suspensions – this is no way to run the Labour party

Keir Starmer has made a mess of dealing with this rebellion. Perhaps Tony Blair could give him some tips, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

Oopsy. Did she ever really believe it, or was it just to get leftists to vote #Labour? #theguardian #pollytoynbee

#PollyToynbee is 100% right: it might be the last gasp chance for democracy: lower the vote to 16. The kids CAN'T do any worse than we've done.

Young people say they’d elect a ‘strong leader’. I say give more of them the vote

Given what gen Z have been through, it’s no wonder they’re not impressed by democracy. But giving them a real stake in it could change everything, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

#pollyToynbee very readable on the list of #tax #reforms which could have been implemented in the name of #fairness
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/nov/22/farmers-protest-tax-labour-reform
Look at the farmers’ protest, and then ask yourself: how will we ever make tax fairer amid such grumbling?

Labour inherited a dire situation that needed desperate change – but powerful lobbies make any tax reform near-impossible, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee
