est un historien et politologue américain, professeur au département de science politique de l'université de Boston durant 24 ans.

He was a leading figure in the civil rights and pacifist movements in the United States, and is considered one of the major intellectual figures of the American left.
The author of twenty books whose themes (labor, civil disobedience and "just war" in particular) are at the crossroads of his work as a researcher and his political commitment, he is best known for his 1980 bestseller A People's History of the United States, which "established him as one of the most widely read American historians, far beyond the American campus".

His best-known works are the documentary Vivir la utopía (1997, Arte/TVE) and the series Prisma (1990-1991, TVE), 26x30’ works that combine documentary and fiction experimenting with different styles. Critics claim that “the Prisma camera defies the conventional rhythms of capturing reality; it moves with a hypnotic cadence”.
