Das Dorf Shanggantang liegt im Nanling-Gebirge im Kreis Jiangyong, Stadt Yongzhou, Provinz Hunan, China. Es ist ein über 1200 Jahre altes Dorf. Gegründet während der Tang-Dynastie, wurde es über Generationen hinweg von der Familie Zhou bewohnt. Name, Standort und familiäre Tradition sind seit mehr als einem Jahrtausend unverändert geblieben und machen es zu einem seltenen Beispiel eines vollständig erhaltenen alten Dorfes in China.
Im Dorf stehen über 200 Wohnhäuser aus der Ming- und Qing-Dynastie, von denen viele noch bewohnt sind. Das tägliche Leben – Kochen, Wohnen und nachbarschaftlicher Austausch – findet weiterhin in diesen alten Häusern statt. Historische Relikte wie eine Brücke aus der Song-Dynastie, Pavillons aus der Ming-Zeit und alte Steinschnitzereien sind im Dorf verstreut und in den Alltag integriert. Es gibt keine übermäßige touristische Entwicklung. Die Bewohner leben weiterhin hauptsächlich von traditioneller Landwirtschaft und bewahren eine Lebensweise, die auf familiären Bindungen und gegenseitiger Hilfe basiert, wodurch das ursprüngliche Leben der alten Bergdörfer im Süden Chinas erhalten bleibt.
