This is my new avatar! I chose a Humboldt penguin because:

1. They have the C-shaped marking for Chill, 10 degrees C and Clippy lol
2. Being a South American species, 10C (50F) is in their temperature range
3. Linux bird!!!

Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch FE receive the May 2026 update (US & Canada)

Samsung distributed the February 2026 update to the Galaxy Watch5, Watch FE, and Watch4 series globally as of today, which came after the One UI 8 Watch update that was released last November. This was done on a quarterly basis according to the security patch rollout timeline that you can read here. This update only provides security fixes to your Galaxy smartwatch.

Currently, this update is only available in the US and in Canada, but the rollout should commence worldwide as early as this week to ensure that your Galaxy smartwatch becomes more secure. The update size is fairly small at almost 150 MB.

Fixing bridged network issues on VMware Workstation 26H1 on network reset

Sometimes when a network adapter resets for any reason, such as the driver update process, there is a chance that VMware might utilize the wrong network adapter for bridged networks, causing the virtual machines to be unable to join your computer’s network. This happens if you let VMware select the “best” network adapter with “Automatic” as the network interface card (NIC), which allows it to choose the appropriate adapter based on heuristics.

However, it’s not always accurate, as it causes virtual machines to lose their internet connectivity if you have more than one network adapter and only one of them is used to provide you with the internet connection. Sometimes, VMware Workstation might choose a wrong network adapter automatically upon network adapter resets, which causes this issue. This happened in our case during our experiment with WordPress 0.7-gold on a VMware virtual machine running Red Hat Linux 9 Shrike with a bridged network type.

If you have a system that uses multiple network adapters, such as Hyper-V virtual Ethernet adapters, you might want to let VMware select the correct network adapter. To do this, open the Virtual Network Editor.

After opening the Virtual Network Editor, run it again with administrator privileges. Afterwards, select the virtual network that is of the Bridged type, and look for the Bridged to drop down box. After that, select the correct adapter. In our case, we have 5 network adapters, with only one providing us connection to the internet, called Intel(R) Wi-Fi 7 BE200 320MHz.

After that, save the changes. Then, try restarting the networking service on your virtual machines. If it didn’t work, shut them down completely, then turn them back on. They should be able to maintain an Internet connection. In our case, the problem was solved.

However, if you’re still running into issues with bridged mode, you might want to check to see if your network adapter is working properly. Also, make sure that your internet connectivity is stable, and that the guest’s networking configuration is correct.

Live kernel patching for ARM64 Ubuntu is now available!

Canonical has announced that Livepatch, which facilitates patching the kernel in real time without requiring system reboot to improve your computer’s security, is now available for the ARM64 version of Ubuntu. This means that ARM64 machines that are running Ubuntu will now be able to update their kernel automatically without any downtime. This makes those machines more secure while the system is still running.

Starting from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon and Ubuntu Core 26, live patching is now available for ARM64 machines! This means that they can now automatically update themselves when there is an important security patch that needs to be applied, making them more secure without requiring a reboot!

Previously available on AMD64 machines with Ubuntu Core 20 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa, live patching has now been extended to ARM64 machines.

Here are some of the details about how the Ubuntu team implemented this support:

According to the official announcement, they had been working on the Livepatch support for ARM64 machines for three years, but it was implemented after lots of effort were put to it. The challenge that faced this implementation was the lack of reliable kernel stack traces that live patching needed and the lck of mature toolchain required, such as GCC, objdump, and kpatch.

Starting 2024, the efforts were being made upstream, with the Linux kernel in ARM64 systems finally earning a net safety required to swap code in a running kernel. Toolchains were updated to accommodate to the requirements of live patching, and reliable stack trace checks were finally implemented in the upstream kernel code.

The toolchains have also been improved to build loadable kernel modules for ARM64 processors, and the build network has been equipped with an infrastructure that is suitable to compile live kernel patches for such processors, with its regression test suites to ensure that everything was going smoothly.
