I think I can trust Maria.” Keith was giving his sister, Katarina Claes, a last-minute lecture before they entered the Magical Ministry’s New Year’s party. “And under no circumstances are you to be alone with Gerald. If he corners you, faint—wait… No, no, no—only if there are other people around. But absolutely do not faint if you are alone with him!”

Katarina cocked her head, giving Keith a puzzled look. “He’s good-looking, but I don’t think I would faint. My heart sometimes flutters oddly, but no, I won’t faint.”

Keith sighed, thinking, “At least she was listening. No, wait—her heart flutters! That’s not good. Not good at all! Why are you such a dunce about this kind of thing?”

“Just don’t be alone with him. Can you remember that?”

“Of course, dear brother. ‘Don’t be alone with Prince Gerald.’ Got it.”

This being a Ministry party, things were more casual than at castle balls, and they entered without introductions. The Ministry assumed everyone knew each other at these events. They were there to have fun, not to maneuver socially.

That didn’t mean that it was a cheap affair. The buffet instantly drew Katarina’s attention with its mounds of tender roast beef carved by white-clad servants; honey-baked hams; roasted goose; pâtés; salads; exotic and #locally raised fruit; potatoes prepared in a myriad of fashions; and a line of tables groaning under their burden of sweets and pastries. It was the last of these that riveted Katarina’s attention.

Keith sighed again and held his sister’s arm tighter. It was going to be a long evening.

Excerpt: "The concept of solarpunk originally emerged in the late 2000s, when a handful of artists on the social media platform Tumblr began sharing drawings of futuristic green cities. Over time, the aesthetic and ethos evolved into a more robust vision for the world, and in the process has been embraced by other art forms. There are now published collections of solarpunk literature, subgenres of music, movements within architecture and even tabletop role-playing games [#RPGs].

"At the core of this vision is the idea that humans can coexist in harmony with the rest of nature. A solarpunk world is one where vast swathes of land have been returned to #wilderness, rooftop gardens dot the skylines of high-tech cities and vertical farms provide food to their residents.

"Responsible use of #technology is also a prominent theme. #Solar, #wind and #wave power have entirely replaced #FossilFuels as sources of energy, while widespread #3DPrinting has made it much easier to produce things #locally, creating #resilient, #SelfSufficient #communities.

"Increasingly, artists and writers in the solarpunk movement also describe a world that is just and safe for #MarginalisedGroups – especially those facing the brunt of the #climate and #ecological crisis today. '#BIPOC [#Black, #Indigenous and #PeopleOfColour] and #QueerPeople are safe in solarpunk futures,' says Brianna Castagnozzi, co-editor-in-chief of Solarpunk Magazine.

"Although it may seem utopian and idealistic, solarpunk attempts to answer real questions being asked more and more often in light of the unfolding climate and ecological crisis. What can be saved? What does a truly #sustainable civilisation look like? How do we get there?

"It may be a big ask, but it’s now clear that the scale of the environmental crises facing humanity demands #TransformationalChanges to the way we live, as well as the way we think. Art has the power to shape our attitudes, so perhaps it’s time – as Nigerian poet #BenOkri said recently – for artists of all kinds to 'dedicate our lives to nothing short of re-dreaming society'."

En un territorio que alguna vez fue según indican puro humedal, hoy conviven barrios privados, calles asfaltadas y cientos de carpinchos que se convirtieron en ícono de Nordelta. Pero detrás de las fotos y los memes, hay vecinos que desde hace años trabajan para entender, proteger y convivir con esta fauna. Una de ellas es Silvia Soto, vocera de La Voz de los Carpinchos, grupo que nació en redes sociales y hoy avanza hacia convertirse en asociación civil.

“Me involucré desde el inicio, cuando compramos el lote que eran terrenos sin forestación, rodeados de naturaleza. Veía el futuro del lugar y entendí que había que trabajar en la reforestación y en el cuidado del suelo”, cuenta Soto, quien recuerda sus primeros pasos participando en comisiones vecinales. Con un pasado familiar ligado al campo, el vínculo con la naturaleza le resultó natural: “Mi madre me transmitió ese amor por los animales. Ser ambientalista en mi caso es una cuestión de pasión y herencia”.
