Last year I planted out six chonky "monobulb"* garlics. They grew some big plants. Pulled one of them up today. Biggest bastard garlic I have ever grown.

IME the size of the bulb you plant absolutely does impact the size of the head you harvest.

* Underdeveloped garlics that failed to divide into cloves.

#gyo #allotment

Not many #allotment posts from me lately because… time… energy… etc. It has not been the smooth gardening year I had hoped for. Work/commute/life doesn't leave a lot left over. So the plot infrastructure hasn't come along as much as hoped, but each year we do progress and maybe next year we will be in a better place?

Can't complain too much really, it's very "1st world problems". I have a job I don't hate, a roof over my head, at least one vaguely working vehicle, stuff, and shit, etc.

The key #gyo priorities are in place at least. Today in the polytunnel I taughtened the tomato strings, side-shooted, and twisted the young plants around the strings. Tomatoes are our priority #1, and chillies are going well in priority #2 position in the polytunnel and greenhouse. I suppose #3 is eggplants and maybe capsicums, going OK in the polytunnel. Plus we have some of all three in the small home greenhouse.

🌸 Zucchini / courgette secrets! Telling male vs. female flowers apart is key for hand-pollination. Male flowers grow on a long, skinny stem & have pollen-covered stamens. Female flowers sit right on top of a tiny, miniature zucchini fruit at the base. No fruit? It's a male! #GardeningTips #GYO

🥕 Heavy feeders 🤝 light feeders! Onions & carrots are companion plant royalty, keeping away pests like the rust fly. But watch out for nitrogen: onions crave it for big bulbs, while too much nitrogen turns carrots into hairy, forked roots. Group them smart, fertilize locally! #GardenTips #GYO

Uninvited Guests: Understanding Why Your #Garden is Infested with #Slugs

"Organic Solutions

If you prefer to keep your gardening practices in line with organic methods, there are solutions that can help. Consider using:

#DiatomaceousEarth: Sprinkling this natural powder creates a barrier that damages slugs physically, deterring them from crossing.
Grapefruit Halves [orange halves work too]: Place grapefruit halves in your garden. Slugs are attracted to the fruit and will take shelter inside, allowing you to dispose of them easily. [Use precautions when disposing]"

Yay! #SunGoldTomato plants have been spoken for, and selectboard neighbor snagged one and thanked me for the #PlantSwap suggestion! TBH, I'm really grateful to be able to interact with more neighbors. A lot of the folks I've known for a while have moved or are thinking about moving. Time to make some new friends!

This from my neighbor / selectboard member / #CommunityGarden organizer:

"I am going to put out a big tarp today to kill off the weeds in the vacant plots. Then in a week or so plant some pumpkin seeds to grow to give to rec for the kids to carve in the fall (or sell them by the side of the road to raise funds for the garden). Also I went a little overboard on seedlings this year, I have a few different kinds of peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, i think spaghetti squash, let me know if you want any i can leave them at the garden some time this week."
