"Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at a federal immigration detention center where he has been protesting its opening this week, a federal prosecutor said.

"Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said on the social platform X that Baraka committed trespass and ignored warnings from #HomelandSecurity personnel to leave #DelaneyHall, a detention facility run by private prison operator #GeoGroup.

"In video of the altercation shared with The Associated Press, a federal official in a jacket with the logo of the Homeland Security Investigations can be heard telling Baraka he could not join a tour of the facility because 'you are not a congress member.'

"Baraka then left the secure area, rejoining protesters on the public side of the gate. Video showed him speaking through the gate to a man in a suit, who said: 'They’re talking about coming back to arrest you.'

" 'I’m not on their property. They can’t come out on the street and arrest me,' Baraka replied."

The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has been arrested at a federal immigration detention center where he has been protesting its opening this week. A federal prosecutor says on the social platform X that Ras Baraka committed trespass Friday and ignored warnings to leave the Delaney Hall facility. Witnesses say Baraka tried to enter the center with three members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation who arrived unannounced to inspect it. They say he was arrested after returning to public property. Baraka has protested the construction and opening of the 1,000-bed detention center, including filing a lawsuit challenging its permits. The facility is run by a private operator.

Trump Administration Seeks $45 Billion to Expand ICE Detention Centers

The ACLU reports the Trump administration is planning to dramatically expand immigrant detention facilities, including opening new immigration prisons in 10 states across the Midwest and West Coast. The plans were brought to life thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request. In a statement, the ACLU warned the expansion would “further the Trump administration’s dystopian plans to deport our immigrant neighbors and loved ones.” Last week, The New York Times reported ICE is requesting new contracts worth $45 billion for for-profit prison companies, including GEO Group and CoreCivic, for the construction and operation of new detention centers.

The maker of the app he had used was #GeoGroup, the largest #private #prison operator in the #US. Over the past decade, the company has also built a lucrative side business of digital tools—including ankle monitors, smart watches & #tracking apps—to surveil immigrants on behalf of the federal govt.

Those products are now aiding #Trump’s #deportation efforts by providing the whereabouts of unauthorized immigrants to #ICE, acc/to legal aid groups & #immigration orgs.
