Private prison company loses Supreme Court appeal

The Supreme Court has ruled against a private prison company facing a lawsuit alleging immigration detainees were forced to work and paid only $1 a day. Wednesday’s decision is a procedural defeat for the GEO Group, but the case isn’t over. The Florida-based company is fighting a lawsuit from 2014 alleging detainees in Aurora, Colorado, had to perform unpaid janitorial work and other jobs for little pay to supplement meager meals. The company said it was immune as a government contractor, but a judge disagreed. The Supreme Court rebuffed the company’s push to immediately appeal that ruling.

George Zoley, the founder & executive chairman of #ICE detention contractor #GeoGroup, said on a quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts Thursday that his company wants to be supportive of the new initiative, but cautioned that renovating #warehouses would be “more complicated than you may think.” [duh]
