"Krystal Tsosie grew up playing in the wide expanse of the Navajo Nation, scrambling up sandstone rocks & hiking in canyons in Northern Arizona. But after her father started working as a power plant operator at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, the family moved to the city. “That upbringing in a lower socioeconomic household in West Phoenix really made me think about what it meant to be a good advocate for my people and my community,” says Tsosie, who like other Navajo people refers to herself as Diné. Today, she’s a geneticist-bioethicist at Arizona State University in Tempe. The challenges of urban life for Tsosie’s family and others, plus the distance from the Navajo Nation, helped spark the deep sense of community responsibility that has become the foundation of her work."

This was a great podcast episode from a few weeks ago, with #geneticist Razib Khan talking about (among other things) his recent post "The Longer I Live, the Wronger I Get to Be." It was a fun, widely cast conversation about a topic I don't necessarily spend much time on. And helped by the obvious camaraderie between the host and his guest. @ngaylinn Not a #Geneticist but I’d say:
o if you start from a stem cell, in theory its complete behaviour once matured can be defined by its DNA
o once mature… I don’t know if you could replace the entire DNA, and the cell would already have expressed all the proteins that its previous genome encoded so it would be differentiated. But I think the proteins that read and turn DNA into RNA then proteins are the same for all cells right? So it might at least partially work? Haven’t heard of this though.
o you can definitely insert some new DNA into a cell’s existing DNA - that’s how #Optogenetics work for example. And this works for already differentiated neurons. But it only adds a small functionality - doesn’t completely change the way the cell works.
