Poche ore dopo l’ultimatum dato all’Unione europea per rispettare l’accordo commerciale firmato in Scozia, per Donald Trump arriva una bocciatura netta. I dazi del 10% approvati a febbraio sono illegali: lo ha stabilito la Corte per il commercio americana. Secondo la corte le tariffe globali generalizzate imposte dal presidente Usa non trovano giustificazione nella legge a cui ha fatto ricorso.
Si tratta di un ulteriore colpo dei giudici alla Casa Bianca che sta tentando di condurre una guerra commerciale senza l’esplicita autorizzazione del Congresso. I giudici si sono espressi a maggioranza, con due voti a favore e uno contrario alla bocciatura: secondo le toghe Trump ha invocato impropriamente una legge commerciale risalente a decenni fa.
Trump aveva annunciato le nuove tariffe dopo che già la precedente serie di dazi punitivi era stata annullata dalla Corte Suprema.
Intanto poco prima dell’annuncio della Corte, Trump ha dato tempo fino al 4 luglio all’Ue per rispettare gli accordi commerciali. Dopo quella data, il “250esimo compleanno” degli Usa, i dazi schizzeranno “immediatamente a livelli ben più elevati”. In quasi sei ore di negoziati, infatti, il trilogo europeo che riunisce Consiglio, Commissione ed Eurocamera, non è riuscito a trovare una intesa, promettendo però un accordo “il 19 maggio”.

Hours after an ultimatum was given to the European Union to honor the trade agreement signed in Scotland, Donald Trump received a clear rejection. Tariffs of 10% approved in February are illegal: the U.S. Trade Court has ruled so. According to the court, the generalized global tariffs imposed by the U.S. president do not find justification in the law to which he appealed.

It is another blow from the judges to the White House, which is attempting to conduct a trade war without the explicit authorization of the Congress. The judges ruled by majority, with two votes in favor and one against the rejection: according to the judges, Trump had improperly invoked a commercial law dating back decades.

Trump had announced the new tariffs after the previous series of punitive tariffs had already been overturned by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, just before the court’s announcement, Trump gave the EU until July 4th to honor trade agreements. After that date, the “250th anniversary” of the U.S., the tariffs will “immediately” rise to much higher levels. In almost six hours of negotiations, the European trilogue, which brings together the Council, the Commission and the Eurochamber, was unable to reach an agreement, promising however an agreement “on May 19th.”

Nel frattempo, i tre cacciatorpediniere coinvolti nello scontro hanno completato il transito nello Stretto e si sono ricongiunti al blocco navale americano, definito da Trump un vero e proprio "muro d'acciaio".
L'ONU boccia le restrizioni di Teheran
Sul fronte diplomatico, si registra la netta presa di posizione delle Nazioni Unite. Il Segretario Generale Antonio Guterres ha espresso ferma opposizione al piano dell'Iran di istituire una nuova autorità di controllo sul traffico marittimo nello Stretto. Attraverso il suo portavoce, l'ONU ha chiesto di ripristinare immediatamente la piena libertà di navigazione, rifiutando ogni nuova restrizione che possa ostacolare il passaggio delle navi civili e il commercio globale di merci.
