@admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com When I joined years ago it was easy. I picked a server at random. I chose the server from the rotating list that you see when you go to Mastodon. It was a server that immediately allowed you to post. Just like with MMORPG {massive multiplayer online role-playing games}, I knew that I needed accounts on different servers. So I created other accounts on other servers which had good up times from the beginning. There was a rotating list you could choose from that you immediately saw, when you were first confronted with a FediVerse. The default client never adviced you to join mastodon.social on the contrary From my POV it's still easy. However that can differ for the casual user #FediVerse #Mastodon #technology #programming #defederation #moderation #power #donations

@guyjantic

There is no one entity who does that {<dis>allowing}

The fact that mastodon.social changed "without warning* the **critical policy** of rotating suggested servers, is highly suspect of a corporate entity pulling strings {read USD / EUR payment}.

This is conjecture, it is not factual, I can't prove it.

The fact however that I'm bringing my mind to that level, means that trust has been broken in the mastodon.social server, which abused the official clients they code, to plug their server, negating the many smaller servers growth.

Mastodon.social has the same weight as any other Federated Server.

We should not have let it come so far. It's become a mammoth that needs to be brought back in line.

Complacency brought us to this level

Another critical section highlighted

Guarding our Federated Network is critical for the infrastructure.
The change is IMHO not just irresponsible, it's a deliberate concentration of users.

Luckily we can reverse the trend, if needed without the blessings of mastodon.social

I've just highlighted a critical portion of this post regarding the concentration of new users and the growth of the FediVerse in a federated manner in relationship to the reality where only one server grows, moderation suffers {user to mod ratio} and other servers regretfully shrink!

No one entity / server should be allowed to grow exponentially defeating the purpose of a Federated Network.

@konstruct That sounds like some terrible instances. However I prefer #defederation over throwing Molotov cocktails at datacenters. A DDOS might also not be a great idea. What could help is to figure out where those instances are hosted and notify the hoster about that Nazi content. Depending on where it is hosted one could also notify local authorities.
Yet another reason to keep Jack Dorsey's Yet-Another-Grifter-platform off the fedi.

Now I gotta clear my browser history with bleach.

@earlgreyocean @George Thank you for investigating and sharing your findings, Mathew. It's the first I've heard of #defederation too.

I have moved my #photography account away from snepshots@photog.social ... you can now find me at:

Pixelfed: @snepshots

photog.social was no longer working for me due to excessive #defederation of other instances. I have tried to move my followers over to the new account, and that seems to have worked for most of them.

Some people might have been missed, though. And all followers from the defederated instances are lost (for now).

So if you have been following my snepshots photography account, but you somehow are no longer, please follow me again on #pixelfed
