Stories From Academia [TM]: One time a hiring committee was discussing candidates for a job. Because of geography and culture it was often hard to get good candidates to stay; we really wanted this guy. One colleague, let's call him Bo, had emigrated from another country in his 60s, and was now probably 70.

Chair: Dr. Smith has a great CV, a promising research program, good teaching skills... any comments before we vote?

Somebody: I think we all want to give him an offer.

Others: [Agreement]

Somebody: He's going to get snatched up by a bigger school with more money. How do we convince him to take our offer?

Bo: I have noticed that Dr. Smith is a Mexican. There are many other Mexicans in town and we might--

HR Rep: This isn't a line of discussion we can continue. We're close to a line here.

Chair: Yes, good point. Bo, keep the anti-discrimination rules in mind, please.

Bo: But I am not discriminating against him...

Chair: Other ideas?

Everyone: [thinking]

Bo: I suspect Dr. Smith is a homosexual! We have a rich homosexual community here and--

HR Rep: DR. BO.

Update: I emailed the conference organizer last night and (much, MUCH more politely than here) expressed my concerns about Canva as a platform for the program/schedule. I'm at the conference now, about 12 hours later, and there are flyers around with a QR code for a "searchable accessible program". And it is!

I saw the organizer, who I think is quite an awesome person, and she doesn't seem pissed at me, so I consider this a rare win.
