A few days ago I was extremely lucky: a cuckoo landed on a dead pine tree on a high hill where I was photographing butterflies, and started calling. Only males make the “cuck-koo” calls. Under the cover of the trees, I approached the bird carefully and was able to take video of cuckoo's calling for the first time: https://youtu.be/WC-RQrq71Cs?si=ESmnbWjN3HtUDGMA
I also learned something new: the aftersound ("coo") comes from the lower breast (not from bill).

Käki, jonka kuulee usein, mutta harvoin näkee. The cuckoo is often heard but rarely seen.
Käkien ääniä alkoi kuulu jo muutama viikko sitten, jolloin ajattelin, että tulisipa kukkuilemaa tuohon lähipuuhun korkealla mäellä. Seuraavalla viikolla se sitten tulikin, silloin käsissä oli eväsleivät eikä suinkaan kamera, jota hamutessaa arka lintu vaihtoi jo maisemaa. Käen kukkuminen on meille suomalaisille yksi kesän äänistä, kun käymme saunassa, uimme ja katselemme laskevaa aurinkoa. Muutama kuva, kun käki on osunut kuvausetäisyydelle.

I started hearing the sounds of cuckoos a few weeks ago, and hoping the bird would come calling nearby tree on a high hill. The following week it really did, but then I had sandwich in my hands and not a camera. While I looked for the camera the timid bird was already changing the scenery..
For us Finns, the cuckoo's calling is one of the sounds of summer, when we go to the sauna, swim and watch the setting sun (if it's setting, in Northern areas, sun doesn't set down for months). A few pictures when the cuckoo has come within shooting distance.

🐦 Cuckoo 🇸🇪
I was chasing a kestrel, which led me to this cuckoo. Since it was sitting, I just took it with me. I was able to photograph kestrels for the next two days.
ℹ️ The Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) grows up to 36 cm tall and has a wingspan of up to 60 cm. Its diet includes insects, spiders and earthworms.

Ich war hinter einen Turmfalken her, der mich dann zu diesen Kuckuck führte. Da dieser saß, hab ich dann halt den mitgenommen. Turmfalken konnte ich dann noch die nächsten beiden Tage fotografieren.
ℹ️ Der Kuckuck (Cuculus canorus) wird bis zu 36 cm groß und bekommt eine Spannweite von bis zu 60 cm. Er ernährt sich vor unter anderem von Insekten, Spinnen und Regenwürmer.
