Tämä sähkötolppa on ollut yksi tuulihaukan mielipaikoista istua ja tähän se lensi ruokailun jälkeen. En ole ikinä nähnyt näin monimutkaisia kytkentöjä :-)... Maalaisrakennusten pihapiirissä ehkä myös saalistusonni on hyvä.

This electricity pole has been one of the kestrel's favorite places to sit, and this is where it flew after eating. I've never seen such complicated connections. :-)... Perhaps hunting luck is also good in the courtyards of farm buildings.

Tuulihaukan hyvä saalistusonni – Kestrel's good hunting luck
Tuulihaukka on viihtynyt maalaismaisemissa ja saanut jyrsijöitä saaliikseen. Se kyttää korkeissa koivuissa ja näkee ilmeisesti jo kaukaa, jos lumen päällä näkyy liikettä. Kuvista voi nähdä, että jyrsijän karva lentelee syönnin ohessa, joten lintu nyppii sitä pois. Samojen laajojen peltoalueiden reunamilla kyttää myös hiirihaukka.

The kestrel has thrived in rural landscapes and has caught rodents. It is hovering in the tall birches and can apparently see from afar if there is movement on the snow. The pictures show that the rodent's hair flies while eating, so the bird plucks it off. The buzzard also hunts on the edges of the same large fields.

Helmikuun hiirihaukka – February Buzzard
Toinen haukka samalta päivältä 10 vuoden takaa. Kuvista voi nähdä kuinka erilaisilta haukat voivat näyttää ja niitä esiintyykin meillä kahta alalajia: lännenhiirihaukka buteo ja idänhiirihaukka vulpinus. Hiirihaukat ovat aika äänekkäitä lintuja ja rupeaa naurattamaan, kun niiden huutoja kuulee. Saapa nähdä mihin aikaan ne tänä vuonna alkavat muuttamaan (talvehtivat Afrikassa ja Etelä-Euroopassa).

Another buzzard from the same day 10 years ago. From the photos you can see how different the buzzards can look and there are two subspecies in Finland: the western buzzard buteo and the eastern buzzard vulpinus. Buzzards are quite loud birds and it makes me laugh when hearing their screams. Let's see when they start migrating this year (wintering in Africa and Southern Europe).

Helmikuun hiirihaukka – February Buzzard
Olen nähnyt lähipelloilla hiirihaukan lentelemässä ja tuli muistot mieleen vuosien takaa. Silloin löysin paikan, jossa lenteli useampi lintu ja tallustin paksussa hangessa kalliomäen huipulle. Hiirihaukat liitelivät sen ylitse ja näin taivaalla yhtä aikaa seitsemän lintua. Olivat muuttamassa kotimetsiin pesimäseuduilleen.

I've seen a buzzard flying in the nearby fields and memories came to mind from years ago. Then I found a place where several birds were flying and I walked to the top of a rocky hill in the thick snow. The buzzards were soaring over it and I saw seven birds in the sky at the same time. They were migrating to their home forests and nesting areas.

Päivän outolintu: tuulihaukka – Strange bird of the day: kestrel
Lintulaji muuttaa talvehtimaan elo-syyskuun taitteessa Keski- ja Etelä-Eurooppaan ja Pohjois-Afrikkaan, joten on harvinainen näky talvella. Varsinkin nyt, kun on ollut hyvin kylmä pakkasjakso pitkään Etelä-Suomessakin. Joitakin lintuja kuitenkin jää hyvinä myyrävuosina (myös hiirihaukkoja), joten ehkä nyt on sellainen vuosi. Tuulihaukkaa hätyytteli pari harakkaa, mutta näytti onnistuvan hyvin saalistuksessaan.

The bird species migrates to winter in Central and Southern Europe and North Africa in August-September, so it is a rare sight in winter. Especially now, when there has been a very cold period of frost for a long time even in Southern Finland. However, some birds remain in good vole years (including buzzards), so perhaps this is such a year. The kestrel was disturbed by a couple of magpies, but seemed to be successful in its hunting.

Kosken alajuoksulle on tullut talvilomille kaksi karaa ja välillä toinen ajaa toista takaa (tai molemmat toisiaan). Ilmeisesti vähäiseksi käyneet avoimet virta-alueet koskessa tuntuvat liian pieniltä reviireiltä, joten toista hätistellään kauemmaksi. Samaan kuvaan molempia lintuja tuntuu olevan vaikea saada. Öttiäisruokaa tuntuu hyvin löytyvän molemmille.

Two dippers have migrated to the lower reaches of the rapids for the winter season, and sometimes one chases the other (or both of them). Apparently the open areas of the rapids, which have become less frequent, seem like too small territories, so one is being chased further away. So it's difficult to get both birds in the same picture. It seems that there is plenty of bug food for both of them.
