Iso rupikonna, luultavasti naaras, tuli vastaan soratiellä. Autoin sitä kohden viereistä ojaa, ettei jäisi autojen alle. Rupikonna kuluu sammakkoeläimiin ja on ainoa konnamme Suomessa. Näin kutuaikana ne sunnistavat tutuille paikoille lisääntymään.

A large toad, probably a female, came across a gravel road. I helped it towards the nearby ditch so that it wouldn't get run over by a car. The toad belongs to the amphibian class and is the only species of toad in Finland. During the breeding season, they navigate to breed in familiar places.

Kun meriharakat alkoivat muuttaa Lounais-Suomeen huhtikuun alussa pari vuotta sitten, olivat merenrannat vielä jäässä. Linnut talvehtivat mm. Länsi-Euroopassa, joten muutto osterirannikoilta näin karuihin oloihin ei ollut liene helppoa. Jos rannat ja maa ovat jäässä, niin ruuan löytäminen on vaikeaa. Tämän vuoden 2026 kevät on ollut ennätyksellisen lämmin.

When the oystercatchers started migrating to southwestern Finland at the beginning of April a couple of years ago, the seashores were still frozen. Birds winter in e.g. In Western Europe, so moving from the oyster coasts to such harsh conditions was probably not easy. If the beaches and the ground are frozen, it is difficult to find food. The spring of this year 2026 has been record-warm.

Varikset ajoivat varsin ärhäkkäästi kotkaa jatkamaan matkaansa järven yli. Niillä on pesiminen mielessä ja kotka ei ole tervetullut vieras. Vanha kokenut kotka ei juuri välitä uhkailuista, mutta nuoret linnut saattavat ruveta väistelemään vikkeliä kiusaajia. Merikotkat ja varikset tuntuvat hyödyntävän toistensa ruoka-apajia ja variksilla on älykkäinä lintuina myös taipumus varastella kotkan saalista: toinen vetelee pystöstä ja toinen kotkan kääntyessä vie ruokaa nokan edestä...

The crows quite aggressively chased the eagle to continue its journey across the lake. They have nesting in mind and the eagle is not a welcome guest. An old, experienced eagle doesn't really care about threats, but young birds may start to dodge nimble bullies. White-tailed eagles and crows seem to take advantage of each other's food sources, and crows, as intelligent birds, also tend to steal the eagle's prey: one pulls the tail and the other, when the eagle turns, takes the food from in front of its beak...
