Two songs of the Fan-tailed Cuckoo

I’ve heard Fan-tailed Cuckoos several times over the years, making their pretty downward trilling call. A few days ago, I heard a different call: a haunting, mournful whistle sighing in the mist.

In this 14-second video, the bird whistles five times:

At first I didn’t know what type of bird was calling. Then I saw a Fan-tailed Cuckoo fly onto a nearby branch:

They’re rather pretty birds, with a russet chest and belly, and a startling orange mouth. On this occasion, I could see only the back of the bird. Here’s a picture of another Fan-tailed Cuckoo, which I saw in June 2020:

Shortly after I heard the whistles, the same bird or another started making the typical trilling call that I’ve heard more often. In this 17-second video, the bird calls four times:

The @ec.europa.eu and the #EuropeanCouncil need to take immediate action over this, which is blatantly contrary to Hungary’s #TEU obligations #Orban #Putin #illiberal #authoritarian #cuckoo

Me and my dog did a 4 hour walk this morning (with breaks), mostly through woodland and fields.

I heard a #cuckoo, which is not common around here. A more common sight, I saw a #crow chase off a #buzzard. The buzzard tried to stand its ground (so to speak 😁) but then a second crow joined in, and the buzzard gave up a flew away in the distance.

I love watching buzzards circle on sunny days, when they bank towards the sun the grey patterns under their wings light up, it's beautiful to watch.

The cuckoo comes in April, sings it's song in May.
One of the classic sounds of spring in Britain. I wonder how many people will actually hear the cuckoo in 2025. The environment is being destroyed all around us, and the people in power don't care.
Does Starmer want to hear a cuckoo. No
Does Reeves want to hear a cuckoo. No
They just don't care.

Very punctual #cuckoo , first heard calling on 01 May! It's too loud for BirdNet to pick it up, but the call strangely carries over all the traffic to the human ear. Listening over the breakfast table.

What a morning! Male #Cuckoo on #Dartmoor along with male & female Redstart. Whilst I was buying my Exeter City Season Ticket, another cuckoo came & landed yards away! Celebrating with a Chunk of Devon pasty. Because.

An amazingly good (for me) video of an Eurasian Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) calling on Dartmoor, Devon.

Hunter Schafer is always amazing
