Takanani kallion korkeissa männyissä istui nuorempia kotkia katselemassa merellä kalastavia lintuja (olin piiloutunut puskiin, joten ne eivät huomanneet minua). Vanha kotka, jonka kesän poikasia oli luultavasti joukossa, lensi yhteen puuhun ja rupesi juttelemaan niille. Varmaan juttua riittää, sillä kalastaminen ja ruuan hankinta on nuorille linnuille elintärkeää oppia.

Behind me in the tall pines of the cliff sat younger eagles watching the birds fishing in the sea (I had hidden in the bushes, so they didn't notice me). An old eagle, whose chicks born in summer were probably among them, flew to a tree and started talking to them. There must have been a lot of talk, because fishing and finding food is vital for young birds to learn.

Kuvissa voi nähdä hyvin höyhenpuvut eri ikäisillä linnuilla. Vanhoilla linnuilla on soidinasussa päänseutu runsaan valkoinen ja jaloissa valkeat läikät, nuorilla viime vuonna syntyneillä vatsapuoli on vielä valkeahko ja höyhenpuku rusehtava, muut ovat siltä väliltä riippuen iästä. Sukukypsyyden linnut saavuttavat 3-4 vuotiaina.

In the pictures, you can see the plumage of birds of different ages. Old birds have a rich white head area and white patches on the legs, young birds born last year still have whitish belly and brownish plumage, others are in between depending on age. Birds reach sexual maturity at the age of 3-4 years.
