A ‘Waylaid' Teaching Diorama – USGS “Geology For Land Use”
--
For about 3 years, this gorgeous diorama has ‘just’ been sitting in a corner of a (common) hallway.
I can’t help but wonder its history:
• What prompted its creation?
• Who was the artisan (truly!) that created it and used those components and focus?
• When was it created? (late 1960s as an educated guess????)
• Why was it seen as useful / in what setting? (as I am sure it was)
• How was it funded?
(never mind that I want to claim it for my office, space notwithstanding…)

Its nice to encouraging stories like this - and exciting.

Over a pint in Oxford, we may have stumbled upon the holy grail of agriculture

I knew that a revolution in our understanding of soil could change the world. Then came a eureka moment – and the birth of the Earth Rover Program, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The Myth And Reality Of ‘Physics-Based’ Models In Geosciences

“Across hydrology, fire, weather, and climate science, models are often described as physics-based—a phrase that evokes rigor, transparency, and trust. Yet, beneath the surface, much of what drives these models are empirical relationships and parameterizations rather than direct solutions of physical laws. These assumptions are necessary to make the equations computable, but they also introduce biases, tuning artifacts, and uncertainties that can propagate through every layer of simulation.
This doesn’t mean physics-based models are flawed or obsolete; rather, it highlights the complexity of modeling natural systems…”

Now I get it. Couldn’t figure out why the current White House occupant and company are so desperate to kneecap scientific research. Historians See Autocratic Playbook in Trump’s Attacks on Science

Authoritarians have long feared and suppressed science as a rival for social influence. Experts see President Trump as borrowing some of their tactics.

Wanna use computer vision for more than image rendering?

Pre-print alert: we published on arxiv our preprint on building FEA-compatible voxel-based RGB+Thermal 3D models, effectively bridging computer vision and simulation in one framework (https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.04448).

While there is still some limitations to this work (e.g. related to surface reconstruction) I hope this work can be the catalyst to more research in using computer vision in #AppliedScience !

👩‍🔬 Thanks to all the co-authors: Etienne Chassaing, Florent Forest, and Olga Fink.

See some teaser images from the paper, where we run FEA on a 3D model built from computer vision without post-processing!
