A snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) nectaring on wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). I think their wingbeat frequency clocks in at 30-35 beats/second. #sphingidae #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature

side note: people always think some weird bug shit is _Cordyceps_. it never is, partly because bugs are just weirder than you think, but also because the parasite you're thinking of was reclassified as _Ophiocordyceps_.

so i made these 2 gifs, share and enjoy 🐜 🍄

This wee beauty is a very special spider...

Periegops suterii is endemic to only two locations in NZ's South Island: Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula, and Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush.

But that's not all... P. suterii is unlike most spiders, as it has six eyes, not eight like the others!

It's #WeevilWednesday

I take so many pictures of these hollyhock weevils (_Rhopalapion longirostre_) in the park that on occasion a few people have asked what I'm looking at and I have attempted to share the splendour and charm of the weevils because, well, just look at them!!

When I do yard work I like to keep my camera nearby in case insects and spiders show up. And they always do. Yesterday I got pics of a Karsch's purseweb spider exuvium, a persimmon psyllid, a tulip-tree beauty, an olique-banded leafroller, and a common Eupithecia larva. #nature #gardening #photography #insects #spiders #MacroPhotography
@colinpurrington aight I gotta ask about your diffusers cause they are similar to but different from my own. I've got the heads aimed back into the cup, lined with mylar foil. How do you like yours? I find I have to boost the flashes up to 1/16 or 1/8 pretty regularly

For those interested in #ecology - fireflies feed on snails and other soft #invertebrates, which presence I use to monitor habitat suitability

The #firefly on my finger has a greenish blue dot on it's right wing, which I painted and use to identify it if I find it again, for a capture-recapture approach

If you're sharing scientific research, have you ever thought about why you're sharing it, or who you hope will see it?

I attended a grad-level #science communication class this past spring, and I've turned the basics into a short #SciComm planning guide for scientists.

It's meant to help you design the way you share your research by prompting you to consider your message, goals, and audience.

You can read the guide here: https://medium.com/@gregorymanni/the-scientists-quick-start-guide-to-science-communication-7efe61bb4d90

Finally took my camera for a walk again. Between being busy with life and being laid up with back issues, I didn't snap a shot in nearly two weeks. Perhaps a new record for me... Also, trying out a new watermark. It's very plain, but it is also easier to use. I may keep playing with it though as I liked the block design of some of my other ideas.
