Larvae (or triungulins) of Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus) on the outskirts of #Bath #Somerset #UK. These hang about on flowers and grab hold of the hairs of visiting solitary bees, which carry them to their nests, where they feed on the bee larvae and the stashed pollen. Oil beetles do not seriously affect bee populations - the presence of parasites and parasitoids like oil beetles is indicative of a healthy, functioning ecosystem

Einstein (allegedly) said: “When a blind beetle crawls over the surface of a curved branch, it doesn’t notice that the track it has covered is indeed curved. I was lucky enough to notice what the beetle didn’t notice.” The blind beetle doesn’t notice, but it has an algorithm to sort out the topology of the branch surface, and skitter away from smug physicists.

One of the most famous apochryphal statements in annals of science was allegedly made by the evolutionary biologist J.B.S. Haldane (Jack, to his friends). When asked by a theologian or theologians what could be inferred about the mind of the Creator from the works of His Creation, Haldane replied, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.” Entomologists are up to 350,000+ known species of beetles, so if there is a God, Haldane may have had something there.

A group of researchers including an associate professor at Yamaguchi University has found that most female Japanese rhinoceros beetles mate only once in their lifetime, which is rare for an insect. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/03/17/japan/science-health/female-beetles-mate-once/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #sciencehealth #beetles #yamaguchiuniversity
Most female rhinoceros beetles mate only once in a lifetime, study finds

As the lifespan of an adult Japanese rhinoceros beetle is a maximum of about two to three weeks in the wild, mating is believed to be programmed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Some more pics of rosemary beetles.
I missed these guys when I was in Canada. They're fairly common here, but they're very beautiful and always a joy to photograph.
