If every bathroom in your house is in use, and you need to go, just turn off the internet.

"how does ML/AI cause less power usage?"

e.g upscaling uses less power for the same reason you can achieve higher FPS; you need less power for upscaled lower resolution images than native higher resolution images.

Other examples:

- GraphCast is a weather prediction toolkit that does the work of a whole datacenter inside one PC, with more accuracy https://deepmind.google/discover/blog/graphcast-ai-model-for-faster-and-more-accurate-global-weather-forecasting/
- Likewise, AlphaFold means you can fold proteins with a single PC, or even search, instead of a DC: https://alphafold.ebi.ac.uk/

and again, I'm not saying everything venture capitalists or big tech comes up with is a good idea, I'm not saying we shouldn't be careful what to spend our resources on-- but that's also exactly why I think people should be more careful than just pointing at something and going 'This Bad!', and instead actually look at what are sensible solutions in the bigger picture.

Been looping this synthwave alllll day.

no matter how i die, it was murder

Listening to PRI; they're talking about 4 yr-ago COVID shutdowns and the female speaker says "It's hard to remember how scary that time was."

No. It's very easy to remember. It was goddamn terrifying.

We had our kids, family, and parents to watch over. Limited resources, limited knowledge, limited time to figure out which end was up before some mistake got made. No vaccine then.

I'm actually tearing up now thinking about it. No. It's real easy to remember that time; I envy you, lady.

heyo!  #introduction time.  i tend to be #verbose, so i understand if my first #toot is seen as #tldr.

i have been a strict #vegan for 10 years.  my #family is small.  my only #son is an #electrical #engineer who is a #licensed #PE in 4 states.  i live with 3 #dogs - an older #yorkie and 2 much younger #biewer terriers.  i also keep an #aquatic #turtle and maintain a #worm #farm for him.

i'm twice #retired, first from the #military, and then from a #normal life.  i'm an #intel #alumnus, having spent 12 years in #post-silicon #validation of #processors and #chipsets.

i'm quite new to the #fediverse.  in #discord they call me #grey or #wolf.

in that #platform i'm either in several #Crypto servers, or in servers full of social/gaming #bots (the #OwO #bot is my #escape from the #ratrace).

my #interests are mostly #technology, #animals, and #music.

i built my first #x86 #computer in 1993.  i've been #crypto #mining for 7 years.  i build my own #rigs.

and now i've reached the limit.
