probly worth pointing out that it's not just that china mine more rare earths than anyone else but that they have the expertise and infrastructure for extraction, refinement and value added manufacturing

china's product is cheaper and of higher quality than anyone else is able to source in the short to medium term

'China does have the world’s largest reserves of rare earths, and it mines more of them than any other nation. But that does not mean it has a monopoly on geological supplies of these and other critical minerals' #geopolitics #rareEarthMinerals #wasteManagement https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/06/opinion/china-us-rare-earths.html

A first-hand look at how technology powered by bacteria is turning mine waste into critical minerals | CBC News

A new research facility in Sudbury, Ont., is testing whether bacteria could help solve two major challenges in mining: How to source critical minerals and what to do with the waste left behind. CBC recently toured the 10,000-square-foot pilot facility to speak to researchers and get a first-hand look at how bioleaching works.
