Late December, brutal cold. I mixed a Smash for my wife and I; a potent blend of hard alcohol we had enjoyed when dating. One was more than either of us had drank in years, much less in a night.

She sipped her second, looked at me, then said

"You know. We work too much."

Dead correct, and God Damn if that phrase doesn't live in my head rent free now.

I want to vacation nonstop with her and forget this nonsense. Life is just too short.

In '87, we received from the sewer: Midnight the cat, jet black, yellow eyes. He took absolutely zero shit from anyone/anything, including:

- Neighbor Cat #1, who he treed for 3 days in our yard
- Ruffles, P-Chee, and Kong; deadly 50 pound pure-muscle Shar-Pei's
- Neighbor Cat #2, who he'd fight by prying open their porch door to GO IN THEIR HOUSE TO FIGHT ON HOME TURF

After many years he passed, surprisingly, of old age. I miss you, jackass; see you in the next life.
