News about a new, open-access journal covering original work in the intersection of mathematics and fibre/fiber arts.

Details are on the website :

Looks intriguing!

This *definitely* needs to get outside my bubble, so boosts are especially welcome, and if people can suggest more hashtags, that would be great.

More hashtags suggested ... adding here as an edit ... not all are applicable, but ... who knows!

Interlace: A Journal of Mathematics and Fiber Arts

The origin of degrading web user experience lies in the ideological misgivings shaping the web: the web, as we know it since overcoming the bandwidth limits of modems, came to be while neoliberalism took over liberal governments and the TINA tenet obfuscated the fact that software can be infrastructure. Some should be infrastructure and not beholden to markets and their embedded incentives, in fact.

Building search engines, the interface to information, on a foundation of ad spending is folly.

Now everybody wants to put funds to attract talent from Harvard. On one side ofc is great. On the other side it kinda saddens me to see that suddenly there's additional UE funds for research... that have been never invested in places were they are urgently needed for years.

Most 'top students' in Spain, Greece or southern Italy cannot join a PhD in their country because of lack of funding and cutting-edge labs. A 'big PI' in Spain has usually 3-4 students, counting away some outliers in Madrid/Barcelona. A Prof position does never come with a 'starter pack', a lab, or students. These countries do usually well in math or theoretical physics because it's cheap. If you look at experimental facilities, we fall behind. Our unis have problems hiring new research personnel, have outdated labs, etc etc.

The US does a terrible policy and then suddenly everybody is considering what can we do to help them. And don't get me wrong, I believe it's a good thing to help people and a great opportunity to catch some exceptional scientists. Just saddens me to see top European talents absolutely wasted, for years, and there is little to 0 conversation about that in other places. As someone who has struggled a lot with this situation, it feels sad.

This is your regular reminder that open source, self-hosting tools are great AND you don't actually have to host them yourself most of the time! Plenty of great companies offer these tools as a paid-for service - exactly like the subscriptions you have on those other platforms, except more ethical.

I'll share my favourites in the thread - please add yours!

I'm looking for papers with discussions on paraphrasing as a common method in classification of linguistic examples. Do you have recommendations for good (critical?) papers/sections in papers on this? #Linguistik #linguistics

Interfaces are a form of distribution channel. What is the truism about commerce?

Whoever controls the distribution channel controls the market.

Hence the landgrabbing rush to control the way you interface with not just a machine computing information for you, but with whole systems of people. Adding a medium of abstraction between "the company" and you that is not your human boss, an interface that can be controlled at scale?

Profit.

As Cass Mudde argues the male gaze in the analysis of contemporary politics has led to the normalisation of the rise of the far right as the actions of a group of young males have been taken as indicative of general trends.... however, they are not.

If we focus on young women's political views instead, then a more optimistic account of political views emerges, counteracting the media's obsession with, and normalisation of the Far Right!

The real story isn’t young men supposedly voting far right. It’s what young women are up to

There is an opportunity staring centre-left parties in the face – if they reject the male gaze distorting our politics, says political scientist Cas Mudde

Vivek writes:
'The phrase Man the Hunter is associated with sexist theories of human evolution, but wildly disparate use of the phrase has led to unnecessary scientific disagreement and popular misunderstanding. In this talk, which follows a recently posted collaborative paper with other hunter-gatherer scholars, I ask: what does Man the Hunter mean?

I distinguish three historical meanings of Man the Hunter; first, the 1966 conference; second, popularized sexist theories of human origins; and third, the human behavioral ecology of hunter-gatherers. I then trace the historical development of these three meanings of Man the Hunter, situating their origins in evolutionary biology, ethnology, feminist studies, ethology, genetics, and other disciplines. This allows us to ask: how are these meanings connected intellectually? After presenting a surprising answer to this question, I conclude by offering suggestions for improving scientific and popular discourse regarding Man the Hunter.'

Vivek is a biological anthropologist who employs evolutionary approaches to the study of foraging behavior, energetics, and health. He earned his PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College and conducted postdoctoral work at Harvard University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary. His present research focuses in Malaysia, where he is one of the Principal Investigators of the Orang Asli Health and Lifeways Project (OA HeLP), which studies the rise of chronic non-infectious diseases over time due to rapidly changing environments. He is co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Hunter-Gatherer Research.

It's wondrous to experience it for a cause of inclusivity and civil rights, but on a very personal level it is so, so satisfying that the rush of techno-mediated weak ties communality, of seeing culture coalesce on shared online media still exists.

What a soothing comfort in the face of slop and search engines in disrepair to experience that the social web lives and creates moments of movement.

It's F5 season on the Fediverse, boys gals and nonbinary pals!
