Billionaires hoard wealth and spend it in wasteful, unnecessary ways like vast mansions, super yachts and private jets.

We could instead end poverty, phase out fossil fuels and provide education and healthcare for everyone.

stole your meme without #AltTxt yadda yadda, the IRAN edition

starts with “IRAN ONCE HAD DEMOCRACY” and ends pleading we read David Talbot’s “The Devil’s Chessboard”, to learn how the Dulles weaponized the CIA for the gringoligarchy.

what the meme fails to mention: CIA exists thanks to a certain Prescott Bush who went into politics after caught as the banker to Nazis.

I want to make the point that Zohran Mamdani talked about affordability while also supporting trans kids and immigrants and refusing to endorse genocide and he won against the heavily favored Democrat despite an avalanche of racist, Islamophobic hatred and zillions in dark money. Candidates can do all these things and win. It's just the Democratic Party is full of sellouts, cowards, and bigots.

It’s been two years since Tihran Oganessian and Mykyta Khanhanov were killed by #Russian forces.

On June 24th, 2022, the two boys from Berdyansk were surrounded and executed. Their last words were:

Tigran and Mykyta were two teenage boys from Berdyansk who became symbols of Ukrainian resistance in the temporarily occupied territories of southern Ukraine.

You’ve probably met Torx, the star-shaped screw that has become common in our phones, consoles, and cars. But have you met Torx Plus? It's the high-tech upgrade nobody told you about: straighter walls, zero cam-out, and way more torque transfer. Sounds great, until you try to open your gadget and realize your trusty T5 doesn’t fit anymore.

We explain the difference between Torx and Torx Plus on our blog: https://www.ifixit.com/News/110702/torx-plus-the-high-tech-screw-hiding-in-our-gadgets

#iFixit #repair

@iFixit does this mean I have to buy a new ifixit toolkit
@anthropy Don't worry, we sell the bit separately! We also include it in the fix kits for devices that use it (some Pixels, Macs, etc.).
@iFixit heck yea, thanks!

@iFixit At least #TorxPlus has some actual benefits.

@kkarhan @iFixit The biggest benefit is that the patent hasn't expired. 🤔

@dalias @iFixit shit like that should not he #patent-able because #Pentalobe doesn't "solve a technical problem with a unique technological solution"!

  • But yeah it's mostly done to shaft unexperienced repair technicians and stifle repairs!
@kkarhan @iFixit Oh, I was talking about TorxPlus. But apparently it has expired now. At the time it was introduced, however, the "advantage" of TorxPlus was that it replaced the patent-expired Torx. 🤡

@dalias @iFixit Okay, tho mechanically it has at least on paper advantages like tighter tolerances and higher torque.

  • Unlike Pentalobe...

Still, screws and screwheads should not be patent-able !

@iFixit Yeah, that, and the hardware stores don't really sell Torx Plus anywhere. I had to buy 300 screws to get the "free" Torx Plus bit in the package. 😒
@wcbdata @iFixit IFIXIT sells them. That's their thing.
@iFixit Somebody somewhere could make a real living off selling replacement screws that use Robertson heads.
@iFixit will you produce a set of torx plus bits so we don't have to buy them individually to augment the tool kits we already have?

@quixoticgeek @iFixit

Make them broadly compatible with a range of drivers so you'll have a larger market 🙂🖖

@simonzerafa @iFixit 4mm and ¼" hex drive are pretty standard now...

@quixoticgeek @iFixit

Offering gentle encouragement to keep that up ... 😁👍

@iFixit Torx Plus, eh? Just hammer in an Allen key.
@iFixit I still feel like Robertson was the good solution we've had all along. :3
Robertson screw - Wikipedia

@iFixit that's a misleading summary: the final conclusion of your article is that it won't hinder repair

(If I have Torx drivers, I can handle either screw)

@iFixit Ah, but do they hold faster? My wallet has Torx screws, which keep unscrewing itself and buggering off. If the + ones holds faster, I'd consider it a bonus.
@martinkubler @iFixit You need to glue them with a threadlocker, like Loctite. The top screw „interface” is independent from the thread.

@martinkubler @iFixit use Loctite...
Seriously. Look up the wide selection they have, though the local diy store will likely only have two or three types, for actual threaded connections, so looking at the packaging is not too much hassle.

Or properly torque them... And no, other drivers will not help you there.

@iFixit
Nice read, thanks!

@iFixit

"the nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from. and if you don't like a standard, stick around a year; it will change"

andy tanenbaum (about computer networks but much more widely applicable)

@iFixit Might be lucky and find that a standard allen key will fit.
@iFixit It's all a conspiracy by Big Screw to get us to buy more screwdrivers.

@iFixit Dit zou verboden moeten worden. Het is allemaal geldklopperij.

This should be banned. It's all a money grab.

@iFixit if my thunkpad and pixels can do with simple Philips screws, idk why everybody need these fancy easily destroyable ones
Standards

xkcd
I'm sure they were genuinely trying to make things better like in that comic, and the fact that it makes it more difficult for us to repair our devices has nothing to do with it.

@iFixit

Why don't people just use a #Robertson, simple and the best screw/screwdriver ever invented.

@iFixit The point of cam-out is that it will push out the bit before stripping the screw. It's a good thing! This is also why most phillips bits are weaker. It's better to destroy the replaceable bit than the screw that's still in.
@valen1 @iFixit feel free to tell me that this is a joke that i misinterpreted but, camout is actually the number one cause of stripping screw heads as most screws are made of pretty soft materials and most drivers are made of hard materials [such as tool steels]

it is believed the value of the cam-out was to avoid overtorquing during assembly by causing the driver to slip out before too much was applied, a useful trait during early manufacturing processes due to poor torque control
these days it's not really a very valuable trait outside of being the bane of anyone who wants to loosen a stuck screw

like i don't think I've ever stripped a torx head screw but I've stripped so many philips, hell i don't think I've ever a stripped a hex screw beyond saving in my life and those things also never cam out whilst having a poor contact patch

- carrie
@aperture @valen1 @iFixit not to mention the difference between JIS and Philips. basically no driver kit comes with JIS and JIS screws are usually much softer, much more common too.
and then there's posidriv
all loosely compatible but also not if you don't want to destroy the screw.
@aperture @valen1 @iFixit of course there is signs of which one is which, posidriv has an extra plus in between the phillips, and JIS usually has a dot on the screw, but the dot is optional.
@aperture @valen1 @iFixit JIS is one of the standards that was intentionally designed to break the screwdriver instead of camming out, but of course most people just use phillips because it fits and looks identical.
I know at least sony repair techs were given a special screwdriver that would break if you tried to overtorque instead of camming out.
@aperture @valen1 @iFixit thankfully though modern phillips is more compatible with JIS with a less pointy bit. I just think it's dumb to have technically 3 different standards for the same looking bit. basically if the size is correct but it's still loose, then it's probably JIS.
it's still worth getting dedicated JIS screwdriver since the driver design is designed to not CAM out and strip the screw, even for Philips bits.

@iFixit “… “Camming out” is just another name for stripping. …”

???

@ErinRose That's very wrong in general sense, absolutely
@nadia (sorry for the ping - we’re sleepy and didn’t notice it tagged you! ._.)
@iFixit I just took off my rear wheel brake cylinder and they used some sort of inverse torx bolt, like the business end of a torx screwdriver made into a bolt. It's not the same thing, obviously, but frustrating. Wound up grinding them off. Why manufacturers do stupid shit like that, I'll never understand.
@iFixit thx, but i always replace them with Phillips screws✌️
