Just took my iPhone 13 to the Apple Store to fix its charging port. Thankfully they could fix it up on the spot, but I asked how much it’d cost to replace the port: €400 was the answer.

Holy shirtballs, Batman! Apparently the entire back of the phone is one piece, including the camera and charging port. That is absolutely horrid repairability!

I knew Apple phones were bad for repairability, but that’s unacceptable.

I've repaired two Chromebooks this week, both belonging to relatives. One computer had the the screen hinges rip out from the screw mounts, the other had been sent crashing to the floor while charging -- twice -- and broken both of its USB-C ports, and therefore couldn't charge.

It turns out that Acer Chromebooks are surprisingly well designed for #repair, with modular boards and consistent screw sizes and whatnot. Replacement parts are easily available. $80 USD and both Chromebooks are good.

Today's #diy project was to #repair the indicator light ("info light") on our #siemens #dishwasher that has been nonfunctional for a good while now. It should shine a blue light on the floor while the machine is running. Not a critical function, but how hard can it be to get a little led to work, right? Yeah a bit harder than it should have been. Took some perseverance and ai assistance to get through it, but spoiler alert; now it works again!

Also fixed this luggage scale that wouldn't go back to 0 anymore. Turns out all it needed was a little lube on the geared plastic slider that drives the dial and voila, back to zero.

I think this one was inherited from someone else. Probably well over 15 years old. A little bit of stitching stops it falling apart.
