I was thinking about this on my run this morning.
My mother’s version of a terrifying future is a rules-based global society in which every nation has an equal voice. That’s the future of the Antichrist, of Hell on Earth. Her version of the shining future is a cataclysmic world war centered in the Middle East with the United States of America leading the soldiers of Christ against the forces of evil. (The “forces of evil” being, it goes without saying, every culture and identity that isn’t white and American and Christian.)
My mother is far from being alone in believing as she does. This version of American Christianity is pervasive across denominations in the United States. My mother is a devout Catholic whose family hails from Mexico, but she’s a white American Christian first and foremost in her heart, I assure you.
I was thinking about my mother and her beliefs as I ran in the crisp winter air this morning. I was thinking about the millions of American Christians who believe as she does. I was thinking about the impossible task of persuading people who believe so strongly that killing us all is the right thing to do not to kill us all.
The only conclusion that I can come to, fam, is that we can’t compromise with American Christians. We can’t work with these people toward making a better world because making a better world is not their goal. To them, only Christ can make a better world, and only after Armageddon. The goal, for American Christians, is Armageddon.
Act accordingly.
