Eight marvelous and melancholy things I've learned about creativity - The Oatmeal

A 10 minute read.

Latest 4 lego projects I've built with my little sister! I enjoy this hobby as it allows me to connect and spend quality time with her.

What are your lego projects? Do you build lego as an adult? Which one should I build next?

So true?

AMAZING visualisation showing the power of urban population density.

If you're an American, could you please comment whether you live in a grey or red area?

Did you know that it is common for logos to include intentional inconsistencies?

Here's an example from the Google logo where parts of the logo are not aligned and where the overall shape of the logo is distorted.

It is common for visuals that have been distorted, especially letter forms, to appear more accurate. For instance, although the entire line of text appears even, characters with rounded bottoms protrude beyond the baseline. Those that seem to be the same thickness all around are frequently not.

That's an AMAZING sand sculpture!

@oatmeal I have an impressive pile of electronics on my work bench. And several piles not on the workbench
@oatmeal it would be cool if you'd add image description to your posts, people around these parts don't like boosting images without description
@oatmeal I don’t even have to ask. This is a personal attack.
@oatmeal Oh yeah....I can totally relate to this.
@oatmeal Would it be larger if you didn't get distracted with that new game you've posted? :D
@oatmeal thank you for this deeply personal look inside my head at all times
@oatmeal I really like the "breathing in" metaphor.
@oatmeal
β˜‘οΈ I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.
@oatmeal #Alt4You In the background is a huge murky pile labeled "Shit I Need to Finish," its denizens moaning things like "end me" and "kill me." In the foreground, the everyman chases a cute, glowing, red little creature labeled "Shiny New Thing."

@oatmeal I know exactly what's going on in this ... *SQUIRREL*

Also, would you mind adding image descriptions please?

Image Alt: A character has stars in their eyes as they chase after a glowing creature wearing a cape labelled "Shiny new thing". In the background is a mound of bulbous creatures of various colours asking to be completed with a big label on the pile reading "Shit I really need to finish".

@oatmeal ok. This is so very much like me. So. Very. Much.
@oatmeal OMG! This is so true. Doesn't help when ADHD is also involved!!!
@oatmeal the diagram about how ideas become a product should be printed and hung in every office wall
@oatmeal me researching on using #neovim πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…
@oatmeal yippee you’re on Mastodon! Now I’m never leaving.
@oatmeal @SusanAShriner Hmmmm…. Looks like β€˜Exploding Kittens’ style graphics?…..
@oatmeal @SusanAShriner I was curious, so I followed the link to the first chapter: Erasers. Glad I did. Now I don’t feel so self-flagellated about using erasers in my artwork. (Oh no! I can’t get rid of the pencil lines! 😲)

@oatmeal THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT

and I feel seen

❀️

@oatmeal O my God, this is me.
@oatmeal
Do I ever feel that one.
@oatmeal
Described my life right there! 😍
@oatmeal I can’t help but feel called out by this.
@oatmeal We don't deserve you. You are too great.
@oatmeal I'd been wondering where it came from. Thank you!
@oatmeal I used to have two inboxes in my office. One was for things that if I didn't deal with them something bad would happen. The other was for all the rest. When that one got too high I would empty it into the wastebasket.
@oatmeal The larger comic is so brilliant, really worth checking out! πŸ‘ ❀️
@oatmeal Been there! (Pretty much all the time)
@oatmeal when is Shartbook going live? If Tacodog isn't the site mascot, so help me God, I WILL snap all the eraser off your pencils
@oatmeal please add image descriptions to your posts.
@elena_von_tsss πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š
@woss this is brilliant! 🀣

@oatmeal working on my TR-Cowbell PCB and enclosure design… oh new Scorpio board from #adafruit . Totally me this week.

@oatmeal

Have we met? It's like you know me.

@oatmeal Your series on creativity was wonderful. Thank you.
Erasers are wonderful - The Oatmeal

An eraser is not a highlighter of mistakes. An eraser is a tool.

@oatmeal
I can relate to that: Announced my album in 2018, produced an EP in 2021 and now it's 2023 already without a release. 😢

If I made music for the living, I'd probably starve as it's said in the German idiom "Brotlose Kunst" (Breadless art). πŸ˜…
@oatmeal Thanks so much for your list of 8 things! As a constipated artist I really needed these today!
@oatmeal Whilst slightly better than most of my friends... you don't know how BAD they are. πŸ˜‰ I only feel virtuous by comparison to the worst.
