I used to be a translator (a long time ago). I'm no longer in that line of work, but friends still ask me for recommendations when they need a translator.

I know we have a lot of translators on Fedi and I would like to connect with you!

If you are a translator who may be taking new clients in the next year or so, please raise your hand, say what languages you work with, and share links to your websites, etc., if you have them!

More below 👇 1/2

*To clarify, I'm looking for translators *on Fedi*, mainly so I can meet a new group of interesting people with thoughts on translation and language. I'm not looking for translation companies off of Fedi at this time -- although I appreciate the generosity of people who have shared recommendations.

This may or may not turn into work in the future. If it does, I will post specifics at that time.

@ShaulaEvans Hi! I'm a medical, environmental and literary translator. I translate from English, French and German into Spanish and Basque, as well as between Spanish and Basque.

@ShaulaEvans

I do translate, but it's all for my own work (i.e. English-language translations.of old German folk tales).

And I don't really do commissions.

@ShaulaEvans Japanese-to-English translator here, with more than 40 years of experience, working for dozens of major and minor Japanese companies, universities, and government agencies, in fields that include telecom, IT, energy and the environment, metals, whisky, and much more.
@ShaulaEvans I work with several languages, and have published a handful of short stories I translated from Hindi to English. I love talking about language and translation.

@ShaulaEvans Hi! I translate from German and Dutch into (British) English.

My background is in computer science and maths and I would *love* to do more maths translations (or proofreading), and more work in LaTeX (a system commonly used for writing maths), but I don't get asked to do that much.

Meantime, I've built up quite a good expertise in construction/civil engineering, and railway/railway vehicles, as well as more general "technical" topics.

My website is mair.allen-williams.com

I certainly *have* thoughts on translation and language from time to time, but I'm not sure I've posted many of them on my masto...

@traducoop @Jdm2 It's wonderful to learn about your work. Thank you very much!
@ShaulaEvans used to be. would do again. English to German. mostly nonfiction, some fiction, science-y, tech. medicine. but open for everything else. learning new stuff is part of the appeal

@ShaulaEvans

👀 @lipow should see this ⬆️ and might have a network of translators here.

@OskarImKeller @ShaulaEvans I am actually translating less, doing more medical writing. EN-DE, occasionally the other way, medical, incl. medical devices, pharma, life sciences; both for academic and lay audiences
@ShaulaEvans Hi. I'm a translator living in France. I'm trilingual and work between English, French and Dutch and from German, Italian and Spanish into either of these languages. Being 70 and wanting to take it somewhat easier, I accept less work than I used to but I'm game for anything that sparks my interest. Marketing and popular scientific material are my particular fortes. By the way, I'm also a food writer. 😀

@ShaulaEvans Swedish/Danish/Norwegian and French to (UK) English. I work on almost everything except legal, financial and medical (which just don't interest me) – currently doing a lot more literary stuff, somehow. But things I've done a lot of are archaeology, TTRPGs, personal development, cookery and – a big personal favourite – technical specifications for things like bridges and tunnels. I really love my job!

I am not sure wether they are on the fediverse or not, but their claim is interesting:

"In an AI era, we provide human services to ensure that our clients' texts effectively convey their intentions and retain their individual style."

@ShaulaEvans

"Final Form provides editorial and translation services. We work with non-/fiction, cultural, art, institutional, commercial, and academic writing. Our interdisciplinary backgrounds in publishing and the arts, sciences, and humanities make us capable of handling your text with attentiveness and dedication."

@ShaulaEvans perhaps you know each other already, but @loeff comes to mind
@ShaulaEvans I manage a small translation firm based in MALTA and we cover all western languages and the main Asian ones. If we can be of any help let me know.

@Kaffone Thank you, Gavbriele.

@ShaulaEvans

I'm a translator, with well over a decade of continuous experience in the industry, and almost two decades total. I translate EN-PL-EN. My experience is a bit eclectic, I've translated everything from marketing texts to technical specification documents to books on close-up magic, of all things.

I'm definitely more than willing to work in translation again.

@oddtail Dziękuję!

@ShaulaEvans @oddtail

Also, Alicja is every bit as good as much more experienced full-time translators. Her two-way skill is top quality. She definitely has the chops for the task.

@ShaulaEvans
I used to work with a technical translation company in Leicester, they specialise in German <> English but can work in almost any language pairs.

Their specialism is Engineering, Electronics and Environmental but, again, are happy to look at almost anything.

The website is https://hetranslations.uk/

(I was involved in the marketing & social media side of things, not the hard graft of translation)

@ShaulaEvans Hello! English to Catalan and Spanish translator here, nice to meet you 😊

I work mostly on localization, but I'm open to basically anything. Occasionally I also translate from Romanian, but I'm not as fluent as English, which is my everyday source language.

I have a single-page website that I really need to update, but never find the time. It has all my contact details: https://mrtraduccions.cat/

Marc Riera Irigoyen - Translator and localizer

@ShaulaEvans

Sure. I retired about ten years ago. Pro language pairs are FR/DE/RU->EN.

@ShaulaEvans my friend is not on the fediverse (yet) but is a freelance, actively working translator EN <> ES. You can find her here

@Mx_Shankly Thank you, Dresser. (I hope you can get her to join us!)
@ShaulaEvans I'm with the Interpreters' Co-op (interpreters.coop), and we translate many languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Pashto, Vietnamese, Turkish, and many more. I personally do Spanish to English.
@Steve Thank you, Stephen!
@ShaulaEvans Hi, Shaula. I'm able to translate Arabic and French. Thank you so much for asking!
@RABid شكرًا!
@ShaulaEvans انت ايضا؟

@RABid Not really. 😂

I did a year of school in France, and took Arabic private lessons for a year with a wonderful teacher from Lebanon.

I can still read and write a tiny bit, but the classes offered were very basic, and I didn't learn much vocabulary at the time.

I had always hoped to pick the studies back up but my life took a different turn towards different language families.

At this point, after tackling several "hard" languages, I'm focusing on learning within the groups I know.

@ShaulaEvans Well, you're well on your way once you're familiar with the writing system. (I'm not kidding when I say the script is the easy part.)
@RABid The script is almost always the easy part! (With perhaps the notable exception of Chinese.)
@ShaulaEvans I agree. I've studied Chinese off and on and have learned only that I have very poor visual memory.
@ShaulaEvans thanks! I'm a professional writer with plenty of experience translating German to English -- technical material, museum texts, message lists for websites and software, etc. some fiction as well. I'm old school and eschew machine translation when possible. I use open-source tools (OmegaT). interested parties can hit me up at https://danshick.com
Dan Shick

@datn Dan, how did I not know that you do translation?

What other secrets are you hoarding???

@ShaulaEvans I'm old! :) I've done a bunch of stuff, which your amazement is making me feel a lot better about, truly. I was a systems administrator for 25 years... been married & divorced twice... never broken a bone... had a stroke at age 50... I have an extremely good ear... what else can I tell ya?

and what secrets are *you* hoarding? :)

@datn You've been busy! I'm so sorry to hear about the stroke, which I wasn't previously aware of -- I hope you're recovering well and you've had a lot of support through it all.

Me? Hoard secrets? I'm sure I don't know what you mean. 😇

@ShaulaEvans Not sure about timing, but to get my hat in the ring: I do JP → EN full time
@niji_limbo I'm delighted to learn this. Thank you!

@ShaulaEvans i was a translator for over 17 years and quit only a few months ago. at this point it's not likely that i'd do that job any more (or perhaps just as a side hustle if i happen to have time and interest in the future), but of course translating is still part of what i am.

nowadays i teach at a university and am doing phd — not related to translating but linguistics anyway.

so, i'm not looking for job opportunities, just wanted to say hi.

@ShaulaEvans Korean <> English, I'm in legal and medical translation primarily but have done everything from corporate financial reports and patent litigation docs to drama subtitles and TTRPG books. Legal translation portfolio available on request, and I'm open to reasonable samples/testing.
@ljwrites I'm delighted to learn about the breadth of your translation experience, L.J.!

@ShaulaEvans

I've been working in German- and Spanish-into-English for nearly 20 years. I've been certified in DE>EN by New York University and the American Translators Association, and I've got an MA in translation studies. I'm also currently taking a court interpreting course so I can hopefully get certified to do that (ES<>EN) in the next year or two, though interpreting is really a new thing for me.

I've done a lot of legal translation over the years, but also a bunch of technical and academic (various) work as well. Hit me up. I could talk about this stuff all day long.

@ThatWeltschmerz Best wishes on your court interpreting course!

@ShaulaEvans

Thank you! It's really interesting and I'm pretty excited about it. Cautiously optimistic...

@ShaulaEvans @lokeloski is a translator and localizer! PT<->EN I believe

@Sharksonaplane Thanks, Shark!

@ShaulaEvans , I have my carrd "professional website" and my personal blog (with some posts on localization) in my profile. Feel free to check them out!
