okay, you can see what I have so far of the Analects translation here. https://xn--hmr.net/classicalchinese/analects/

I am aware that the site theme is currently rather jank on mobile.

This is odd. Due to my timeline being an absolute firehose, I changed my settings to only show English-language posts, then did a full page refresh "just in case" to get the setting to stick.

Today I've seen at least one post in my timeline which was (a) not boosted by anyone, much less by someone I follow, (b) not posted by someone I follow, and (c) Mastodon recognized that it was not in English, because it offered me the translate option/link.

Mastodon bug?

Last night my wife was trying out Tunic on Switch 2, which unfortunately has untranslsted game menus, dialog boxes and such. Luckily, there's a fully translated version of the manual online. But before we looked that up, she tried translating some via her phone, and the results were hilarious. I was LOSING IT about this last night. 😂🤣😂

(And now I'm finding out that the manual and dialog boxes are PURPOSEFULLY a made up language that translates as you play. But, like.. any kind of vague hint about this from the devs would've been nice, though..)

Happy 2026! I’m relaunching Root & Branch with a new resource: The Library.

It’s a curated archive linking foundational theory with modern practice in the #SocialEconomy.

New in the archive:

🏛️ Law 381: Italian Social Co-ops (IT>EN)
⚔️ 1936 Decree: Catalan worker-led economy (CA>EN)
📜 FBES Charter: Brazilian Solidarity Economy (PT>EN)
🧠 Methodology: Why structural fidelity beats "flow."

finished translating the second chapter of the Analects. I should probably go ahead and get the website up soon and not insist that it's completely finished first. #classicalchinese #translation #localization #philosophy

english:
'Socially frustrated Barry Egan calls a phone-sex line to curb his loneliness. Little does he know it will land him in deep trouble and will jeopardize his burgeoning romance with the mysterious Lena.'

Amateur translators have a tendency to treat the source language almost as though it was sacred. They often prefer sentence structures and words that are closer to the source at the expense of sounding natural in the target language.

Professional translators can have almost the opposite defect. Moving much more quickly through a text, we can too often make use of common turns of phrase, smoothing out the text and making it less idiosyncratic. The source text isn't sacred, it is more like raw material.

I fall in the latter camp and admit to feeling frustrated at times trying to work with amateur translators (or, even worse, the original authors) who think a janky text is more true. But the truth is, I could probably do with a bit more reverence towards the uniqueness and character of the source language.
